Sigrid is a young wood elf from the graylands. Born daughter to a farming family, she had a chance encounter with her goddess. . She left the farm to study at the huntsman academy to become the champion she needed to be.
Rubin Rose was born in the rural outskirts of the city Fjarora, located in the jarldom Stjarnavǫllr in the Graylands. Coming from the lower class, he had a rather hard time growing up. His parents were even poor for the standards of the lower class. This lead to Rubin being picked on by virtually every other kid. Without any friends in the world, Rubin mostly turned to himself, Choosing to fully dive into the books he occasionally could buy with the small amount of coin he made by preforming chores.
A big pillar in his youth was his older sister, Sigrid Rose. She always tried to protect Rubin as much as she could. But eventually, after their mother died of a rather dire outbreak of the cold, she would move to the capital to enrol in a course at the most prestigious huntsman academy in the Graylands: Kiseth. This left Rubin alone to care for his father who had turned to alcohol abuse after his mother died. This also meant the now young teenager had to do virtually all the work on the farm.
This was his life until, like always, the gods had another plan for the boy. See, the Graylands are known for their especially harsh nature and the ginormous amounts of free roaming monsters that you would not find anywhere else in the world. Some speculate that it’s a perpetual trial from the gods, the huntsmen however have found that these monsters emerge from various ‘hotspots’. These are small, spontaneously appearing portals to the different other realms. According to the huntsmen this phenomenon only happens here due to the especially unstable flow of ancient magical energy on the island. One such hotspot just so happened to appear close to the city, in the tundra’s near it. On that night, the city was attacked by many different fey monsters that emerged out of the portal. The small farm community outside of the city walls where Rubin lived was one of the first targets of the attack.
On that fateful night, Rubin lost about everything he had left. His home and father. He prayed to all the gods, even the all-father that it would be alright, that they would please spare him. And so, after cleaning up the mess of monsters and closing the portal, the huntsman stationed in Fjarora searched the ruins of the farm, only to find a 16 year old boy sitting among the ruins next to his dead father and a dead Redcap, a fey creature.
The huntsmen took him in and send him to the capital city to live with his sister. It was here that Rubin grew a great admiration for the huntsmen. After all, they had saved him and their training would be a great tool for him to become someone who could prevent tragedies like he had experienced. That he vowed to the all-father, the greatest of vows. And so, at the age of 18 he enrolled into the huntsmen academy Kiseth, just like his sister had. After years of hardships and trials he graduated with flying colours, a tribute to the fierce dedication of the shy and timid man.
After he graduated, Rubin was stationed along with a few of his old classmates in the area of his old home. These classmates were now his team and about the only friends he had: Their leader, Summer, Zhara, Aiden, Adrian. Together they were tasked with protecting the area along with the local guards, patrolling the lands and investigating strange events if they would occur. At this point, Rubin was about 23 years old. Everything seemed to go well, but you know how that story ends. On a silent night, with the aurora above them lighting the skies the team of young huntsmen saw it. They were on the walls of the city when they saw a swarm of monsters appear on the horizon, them crossing the tundra at a high speed. The alarm bells were rung, this is it, what they trained for. They went down there to make a forward defensive line Infront of a small village just outside of the city.
The fight was long and the monsters kept coming without a seeming end. The numbers of the guard force were thinned out gradually. The team got eventually split up in the chaos of the battle. With the civilians evacuated and the guard force almost wiped out, it seemed that the small team was about all that was left as a defence. The monsters were not actually all that strong, most seeming young. It was just the huge amount that was the problem. Through a form of guerrilla tactic, Rubin managed to clean up the last of them, another team had closed the portal. Success!
But that Euphoria of success was short-lived when Rubin saw the aftermath of the battle. Many civilians lost their homes, a lot lost close relatives or friends. The guard force in the city was thinned out by this attack, one of the biggest in the city’s history. Yet, through all this loss, Rubin was hailed as a folk hero, for putting his own life on the line, being out in the monster invested village all on his own, saving life’s and cleaning the village of monsters. Though, the already timid and shy man did not enjoy this amount of fame and recognition, especially not now. He had to grieve. His team had taken a huge blow. Aiden was found bleeding profoundly amongst the ruins, Dying not much later as he was carried to the hospital. They also found Adrian, at least what was left as a pack of monsters had feasted on him. Zhara was never found, no body knows if she deserted or worse… got completely eaten. Summer was found, barely defending herself. She was not mortally wounded, but wounded none the less. What took the biggest blow for the girl was seemingly her never ending positivity, making way for a cold and defeated attitude as she learned what had happened to her friends. Rubin did the only thing he knew, placing the blame on himself for not being there with his friends. Summer tried his best to talk this out of his head, but she never managed to do so as Rubin walked away, resigning from the team and returning to his sister to live there and waste away his life, stuck in his books and self-doubt.
