29-30 April 1410

by Beauregard Delacroix

To my surprise, it would seem that my old life is suddenly catching up with me. It’s been nearly a year since I first left to London from Manchester; yet I’d believed I’d have much longer until I’d have to return to a daily life of picking up clues, investigating witnesses, and looking at bodies. I’d even heard from my wife! (mem; I must bring up the possibility of taking our group back to Britannia. Likely soon.) By fate, it would seem I’m getting ahead of myself.

How could I have underestimated my former assistant! Elizabeth sent a letter via pigeon. Even in Polania, an employee of my old firm is more than capable of finding a missing person. (mem; I also got a note about my boy, who ran off to seek his “divine retribution”. I can’t believe it’d take me more than a week to find him with the proper tools).

The Baron Saxton himself arrived the evening of yesterday. To my surprise, he was much more pleasant of a negotiator than his knight, Sir Robe. A great, big, lover of ale he was, and his pockets were quick to open. With him he brought 10 knights and an incredibly strong black Dragonborn. I quickly learned his name was Marak. I spent quite the night, drinking and dancing with him. I remember fondly his strength, and I’m more than willing to welcome him into our group. The Baron offered us the land of Greenstone, to manage under him. Marak and Toll seemed more than excited to do so, with plans to erect new buildings and “a great statue of Tiamat”.

If only the good fortune had continued. We were awakened in the night by a barmaiden, who I later learned was named Rita (mem; she will later be a key witness). She informed us that she thought Pina, the local wizard, might’ve been killed. She remarked that she saw a sword coming out of her throat, and escaping from the house she saw a knight with armor shining. She claims that she could not make out his face.

Dimly lit by moonlight, the crime scene was especially gruesome. Pina had been stabbed through the throat, blood pooled around her. She was dead when I arrived. She was splayed out with her clothes torn, and a bit of sulfur lingered on her hand. The name “sir jerry” was inscribed on the hilt of the sword in her throat. This painted a clear picture, with the shivering swordless Sir Jerry clearly being painted as guilty. After questioning the morning following, he refused to say if he had killed Pina or not. Marak and Sasanna acted quickly and executed him there. Marak strung him up in the middle of town. It wasn’t until later that I learned that Idryn spotted traces of illusion magic in Pina’s house. The Dealer made an appearance to confirm my suspicion that we’d killed an innocent man.

I suppose this morning leaves something to be desired. . .

When I accepted Baron Saxton's invitation to defeat a rowdy group of "white-tusks" I'd hardly expected to be grouped with Sasanna and Val'shann. No matter, more hands gets a job done faster. . . though we are technically a group of 5, it feels to be quite...
