Doctor West personally chooses patients who have been touched by the maddening influence of things that should not be, and after helping them overcome their mental instability, recruits them to fight the darkness that many did not believe they had seen.
Carter is a highly skilled mage, and a psychiatric prodigy. He has an almost innate understanding of the mortal psyche, and has used his skills to grow his organization into a powerful, yet mostly secret, last line of defense against those forces that seek to rule or destroy the mortal plane.

Body Features
Pale skin, salt-and-pepper hair, a bit hairier than the average man, fit physique. Has various scars along his arms and torso, and one long scar across his left thigh.
Facial Features
Salt-and-pepper close-cropped hair and trim beard, a small scar across his upper lip on the left side of his face, crooked nose (as if it has been broken one too many times).
Identifying Characteristics
Always wears his Master Investigator signet ring and head doctor's badge of office (a red glass brooch).
Physical quirks
Limps slightly on the left side.
Mentality
Personal history
Carter was born to landed farmers in the interior of Arkham Country. He was raised on the farm and homeschooled by his parents, until striking out on his own for Miskatonic University when he was twenty; he wished to enhance his magical prowess, beyond simple parlor tricks learned from what books he could find. He was well trained at the university, and became a very accomplished wizard; eventually, his focus shifted to psychology when a very dear friend, Hector Jacobi, turned out to be a cultist of Hastur and tried sacrificing Carter for the good of his cult cell. After studying this new, horrifying side of magic and psychology as well, he was recruited by Rand Lovecraft to Arkham Asylum and then eventually into the Lovecraftian Order. After Rand passed, Carter took over as Master Investigator, and has been leading the charge against the forces of evil ever since.
Education
Homeschooled and self-taught, later studied magic and psychology at Miskatonic University. Was apprenticed as a psychologist and doctor at Arkham Asylum under Rand Lovecraft, who also taught him more about magic and the eldritch powers of the Far Realms.
Employment
Works as a head doctor and psychologist at Arkham Asylum, and secretly as the master investigator of the Lovecraftian Order.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Has personally destroyed over 30 cells of Elder God and Great Old One cults, the highest number belonging to the Outer God Hastur.
Failures & Embarrassments
Was forced to kill his best friend Hector because of the influence of the Cult of Hastur.
Mental Trauma
The touch of madness gained through the knowledge of the Outer Gods leaves most in the Order a little off-center. Carter deals with his nightmares better than most, but even he has slight manic tendencies in some rare cases.
Intellectual Characteristics
Highly trained in magic and as a doctor and psychologist, and therefore is very analytical. Speaks clinically, most of the time, and has to explain a lot to those less educated than himself regularly.
Morality & Philosophy
"Success is not final; Failure is not always fatal; it is the Courage to continue that counts."

Quotes & Catchphrases
"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life. Or, in my line of work, you've seen things that should not be possible."
Savvies & Ineptitudes
Highly skilled psychologist, but tends to use that inappropriately in social situations, and comes across as cold and distant to his colleagues who are not as dogged in their pursuit of their enemies as he is.

Wealth & Financial state
Carter is not particularly wealthy, however nor is he poor. As a doctor of Arkham Asylum, he is paid well, though since most of his personal funds go straight into the Order, he does not have much in the way of savings or material possessions, beyond those he needs for his work. He keeps a small personal savings, and has a few luxury items, but most of his money is spent on necessities or used for the Order.
Family Ties
Carter's parents had two other boys, Mathias Jr. and Gareth, who grew up to continue the family farm. They still live in Masonton, and Carter rarely speaks to them. His parents have passed, and he has no children.

Carter is a casual believer of Ivern the Sower, the god of farms, plains, and fertile harvests. This is a hold-over belief from his time at home, and though he does not practice much anymore, his faith still persists.
Social Aptitude
Highly driven, and has a natural charisma, though can be very blunt, forward, and crass on occasion.
Hobbies & Pets
Has two familiar Ravens, who are actually a hivemind organism, named Huginn and Muginn.
