Personal history
Bastion was a warforged soldier during The Last War stationed at the Brelish fortress known as Argonth. He was an active defender there from attacks from Thrane and Cyre as well as one brush with an undead legion from Karrnath.
During one of his unit's rare missions as a front line force, Bastion found himself struck by a riderless horse and suddenly decommissioned on a muddy battlefield in Cyre.
Moments later, The Mourning happened.
All around, the temporarily unconscious, Bastion there was whirling smoke and the shrieks of agony of any living creature caught in the godless vacuum.
Then Bastion snapped awake as a voice spoke to him. Not audibly. It seemed to be coming from inside his own head?
Do you know where we are? Who are you exactly? I think you're like me, aren't you? Lost, I mean.
Bastion looked around, but there was no source of the voice? He called out, "I don't know what's happening? Where are you?"
I'm not sure exactly. I think I know which way you need to go though. I can help you, but you have to let me.
What could Bastion say to that? All around him, shadows in the mist were roiling on the ground, yet he felt nothing. In fact, the mist was staying clear of him by about a meter or more.
Bastion didn't feel like he was alone. There was an unseen power there with him. Something pure. Like the manifestation of the fabric of reality. And it was protecting him.
"Which way do I go?" Bastion asked, aloud.
No more than a second could have gone by before Bastion felt himself yanked in one direction with such force that it nearly caused him to black out, again. It felt like the world rushed passed in less than a moment with Bastion's body lagging behind as it overcame inertia.
For now, go home. I'll speak to you again, once I figure more out for myself.
Bastion was frustrated for a moment as he felt himself slam into the ground and stumble forward since his legs weren't braced for a sudden landing sensation.
He jumped to his feet, scanned the area quickly only to find himself in the Brelish countryside.
Argonth was right there, less than a mile's walk straight ahead. He must be on the path from Cyre.
Behind him, Bastion noticed a towering wall of the black smoke swirling in a maelstrom of echoing thunder and the far-away sound of unknowable anguish.
The voice wasn't saying anything.
Bastion went home.
Education
Bastion was trained as a guardian soldier at the military fort constructed on Argonth. There, he received a very broad crash-course on the world, in general. As one could expect, any historical education was filled with Brelish propaganda.
He excelled in visual conceptualization of statistical data. Bastion has developed a personal flare for drawing, or conjuring, graphs to prove a point.
Employment
Bastion was assigned to a branch of The King's Shields that acted as the military guardians of the floating fortress, Argonth.
After being reactivated during the Day of Mourning, he found himself back at Argonth as a returning member of the Brelish forces sent onto Cyrian land the week preceding The Mourning. Nobody really questioned the straggler who was "damaged, retreating, and barely avoided the mist".
Once the war ended, Bastion left Argonth for Sharn in search of an education and, hopefully, answers for the voice in his head. He has found himself as a valued member of the Morgrave University Field Expedition Squad (MUFES). He provides protection to the less-capable combatants when danger arises during adventures.
Morality & Philosophy
Bastion privately believes that any person without the ability to fight off a rat should keep their civilian flesh-sack back in the library.
person.gender_identity
Warforged are not given specific genders when they are created, and many of them do not identify as a biological gender since they cannot reproduce, nor do they have the desire.
Bastion has adopted he/him pronouns as most people address him as such due to the large build and low robotic voice. "He" sure beats "it".
