Born in the shadowed depths of the Underdark of House Varn'dekil line, he was expected to follow the ruthless path of his kin — treachery, ambition, domination. But from a young age, Hiroshi found himself resisting the cruelty woven into drow society. He trained in secret with a wandering surface warrior — an exiled Ronin named Kazuma Brightblade, who had descended into the Underdark seeking death or redemption. Kazuma instead found a student.

Hiroshi learned the art of the blade, but also the code of honor, restraint, and self-discipline. Kazuma’s teachings gave Hiroshi a name to carry beyond the caverns: Brightblade — a title meant to shame darkness and reflect light, even in a drow's hands.

When his house learned of his betrayal, they slaughtered Kazuma and branded Hiroshi a traitor. He fled upward, through smoke and steel, carrying only his katana and his master’s teachings. On the surface, Hiroshi wandered as a Ronin — an outcast with a code — offering his blade in protection of the helpless and oppressed. Still, he was rarely welcomed; his drow heritage preceded him.

Then came the mists.

He was guarding a small village from bandits when a storm rolled in — unnatural, silent, gray. The villagers vanished. The trees turned skeletal. The sun failed to rise. Hiroshi found himself in Barovia.

There, he heard of a tyrant — Strahd von Zarovich, a warlord cloaked in ancient sorrow and cruelty, whose realm was choked in fear. A dark mirror of everything Hiroshi could have become.

And so he draws his blade once more — not for coin, nor honor, but for redemption. If he can strike down the lord of this cursed land, perhaps he can prove — to himself, and to the world — that even a son of the Underdark can walk in the light.
