This is the story of a paladin named David. David was not always a paladin. A long time ago David was a hardworking farmer living just outside of Daggerford. He had a wife and two beautiful children. He used to live a modest yet happy life with his family. Their life could be considered ideal. Until the day it wasn’t…
The farmer comes home one day to find that everything that gives meaning to his life is gone. Crops are burned, animals slaughtered, bodies and broken pieces of his life strewn about. Everything that he loved taken from him - his children... One can only imagine the pit of despair, the hours of Job-like lamentations, the burden of existence…
The farmer cried for days and days. He mourned for the loss of his beloved family. And then he turned to his religion for assistance and guidance. And he prayed with all his power for many days. Until a voice from above responded to his appeals:
- My poor human, I’ve seen your suffering and the disasters that struck your family. But please tell me what do you want now?
- I only want revenge, to avenge for the unjust crimes against me and my family. I want to find the person responsible and make him suffer as much as I do. And then I would like to die peacefully and meet my family, so that we can be together once more…
- I feel my poor human that you are in pain, but beware. Revenge is a disease that eats at your mind and poisons your soul. The orchestrator of this tragedy is a dark figure with powers beyond your imagination, a shadow with a despicable agenda. I can tell you that the unfortunate event with your family happened only because your family and your life was pure and happy. It would be a mistake to hunt her. Your passion for revenge will cloud your judgement. That will lead you to a life chasing something that will possibly destroy you.
- Then what should I do, when I feel my life is so empty? How do I gain redemption?
- Redemption from what?
- From not saving my family when I had to…
- Make sure your passion isn’t your sickness. You hide a great power inside your soul. And your pain only enhances that formidable power. But you have to harness that power and then use it for good purpose. You cannot overcome this adversary, but you can stop its evil plans.
- But I am not a warrior, I’m a farmer.
- You are a warrior! You just don’t wear an armor. Your will and the power of your soul are sharpest weapons than any sword. But you need to remember that in your quest for redemption, you have to not become the monster you are fighting. Remain the person you used to be, a loving husband and a caring father, a patient and hardworking farmer, an innocent and peaceful citizen. Have faith in humanity and in yourself, be loyal, try to save as many as you can. I wish you well and I will always be there in case you ever need me…
And in a veil of bright light the voice disappears. The farmer gives a promise to himself at that very moment. A life's work erupts from his knotted mind. He has to stop that individual’s hideous plans, he has to protect as many persons as possible. That’s what his family would have wanted anyway. It was that day that David became a paladin and took the Oath of Redemption…
