Born in Providence, her parents died in a car crash when she was young and she was sent to live with various relatives who were abusive, neglectful, or both. When she came out to her cousin Derrick at age 15, he raped her to try and "covert" her back to heterosexuality and prompted died in an accident afterward, leading to her becoming emancipated at 16 and moving to New York.
