From the streets of Naporia, Anathema Brightmist seeks to do good in the world to make up for her checkered past. Through unforseen circumstances, Anathema has become Champion of the Buried One, and she struggles to understand how to move forward.
Kids.
He didn’t tell her the money was for kids.
Suddenly the house was empty and she was alone and she was so certain of it.
But the street was not her home, and she was not ten, though she was alone. She was glad of that. Alone, she could make up her mind on what to do next. Alone, she could make her next move. Alone, she could think.
Still in her finery, she ducked into an alley away from streams of people leaving the gala to catch her breath, to banish the child from her mind. Five seconds, she allowed herself five seconds to panic, and then she had to move on.
The thought crossed her mind, for the first time, of going to the guard and reporting Edi. Before she was too small, too powerless, but she had her own power in that room, surrounded by anonymity. Something changed when she was told the purpose of that money, what she was planning to steal and from who. It never mattered until it did.
With a groan, she leaned against the brick wall behind her. Who else was hurt by what she’d done? Who else did Edi rob and give her the barest of details to mask who she was harming? Yes, she would do the right thing and report him, anonymously. She would leave money with Fidget, the eldest of the Littles, so they could still be taken care of. It didn’t feel like enough. It couldn’t be enough.
What would Daddy say?
There was nothing here for her in Naporia after that. Anathema Sincero was a flirt, a tease, a tart who would steal your gold while you gladly watched, but what good did that do? What did good people do? From her position in the alley, she heard the double doors of the building across from her alley swing wide, and the merriment that flowed from within. A group of men and women wearing Renowned Crystals exited.
The Guild.
She’d used her abilities to steal, to distract and take, and once in anger, just once, once to harm without provocation. The adventurers of the Guild made money, to be sure, but they used their abilities for good. She couldn’t join here, couldn’t take quests around Naporia, not if she was turning Edi in.
Five seconds done. She had a plan, a direction, and had it on her own. Pushing from the wall, she turned heel, smiling in the darkness, letting her skirts swirl about her in Naporia’s jasmine air.
