Laeya was born into the cult of Leira as one of two twin daughters to the High Mistcaller (High Priestess), Senka.  Her father was a Drow servant to Laeya's mother and was used for his seed then sacrificed as an offering to Leira in an attempt to maintain the secrecy of the twins' origins. One of the twins was to become the next High Mistcaller to the Worshipers of the Mistshadow. However, their training was isolating, and while Odessa was willing to put up with the cold and isolating training to become a High Mistcaller, Laeya was not as adherent to the strict rules placed upon her. She wanted independence, and as she learned more about the outside world, her disdain grew for the world she was in.  With the help of her friend, Myst, she escaped from the church before her and Odessa's first Unmasking.  
 
Since escaping, she has rarely ever used her real name and constantly changes masks in order to hide her identity.  She began to create roots in the Western Trade City of Dinasfasnach, building a small band of thieves with the hope of creating her own thieves guild, but bit off more than she could chew and was nearly killed along with her friends. She began plotting her revenge and decided to try to get the upper hand by hiring a private detective to help her gather information on The Sickle and the Collector who worked for them and ordered the hit on her guild. She made dealings with a rich businessman who had his hands in the underground world as well and built up a new web of allies while searching for revenge. She had a wrench thrown into her plans however, when she fell in love with Arksyr.  She began to regret having gotten him involved with her dirty business and tried to get him away from trouble.  Trouble found them when Arksyr became a high ticket bounty for The Sickle as he was blamed for the Collector's death.  Laeya made a deal with the Sickle for Arksyr's life: She would pay for his life with her own.  On the day she was to be executed, Arksyr came forth and cut her from her binds, admitting to her that he had fallen for her just as she had fallen for him.  
 
The two decided to run away in search of a different life until their deeds were discovered by the King of Brioningon. They were asked to use their skills to join the race to discover the rest of the globe, and with the promise of protection from the Royal family and the search for lands untouched by any of the dangers they were running from, they agreed to join in the expedition.
