Personal history
Blossom is originally from Slew and was raised alongside her two siblings, Petal and Sprout by their single mother, Adelaine. Growing up in the poorer side of the city and with a mother who was working tirelessly to try and support them, Blossom often found herself at young ages in more seedy places with less than stellar reputations. But with her cuteness and bravery, Blossom was able to navigate most areas of the city with a smile and a new friend.
Being the youngest of 3, Blossom never really felt like she had her own crowd. The eldest, Petal, was a musician in with some of the more performance driven side of the city and Blossom had no skill in it. The middle mousekin, Sprout, had proven himself as a street performer, boasting feats of strength meant to surprise travelers and tradesmen as a “mighty mouse”. Since Blossom was not invited to hang around with her siblings too much, she had to find her own group to align with. As she grew, Blossom tried her best to fit in with workers in the area through many different means, including drinking (she couldn’t hold out very long at these contests), fighting (she was quick but not very battle seasoned), and gambling – here is where she found her niche. Blossom quickly found a natural aptitude as a gambler and not only was it fulfilling for her social life, it provided an avenue for money making since her family sorely needed every member of the household to contribute.
Through gambling and hanging around some of the drinking halls of the poor folks of Slew, Blossom has met a whole cast of characters, many of whom she calls friends. Just after her 12th birthday, Blossom and her halfling friend, Frederic, met a more seniorly human man named Richard. Richard had been sitting along the road asking passerbys for spare change and had been kicked by a passing patrol of the city guard when Blossom and Frederic were leaving the tavern. Rushing over to help him, the two walked with Richard back to a small overhang near the docks that he had been sleeping under. They shared some food with him and chatted. Richard had been a merchant for some time before his ideas about fairer wealth and a run in with some high members of the Merchant Princes left him disgraced and outcast. Now a beggar, Richard used his contacts to begin a small group of rebels named the “Free Paupers” who sought to alleviate and redistribute the hoarded wealth of the Merchant Princes amongst the poor of Slew. They looked for any way to disrupt the oligarchy of Slew and help their starving neighbours. The group consisted of a small group of autonomous people who met regularly to discuss and debate the best ways to meet their goals and included Richard, the founding member but self-described “non-leader,” Teknamin a rather serious myconid who feared Slew’s influence would corrupt the Mire, Darsuhulda a dwarven dock worker who often advocated for the community of dock workers she was a part of, Yarjin a dragonborn storyteller and academic of great repute, Adam and Rosa twin human troubadours who brought joy and levity to the group, and Gresla a mysterious female half elven wizard who (according to a whispered conversation between Blossom and Adam) may have once been a member of the Alabaster Academy.
Blossom and Frederic joined the group and began helping with small initiatives like community breakfasts and tutoring programs for the poor youths (this is where Blossom learned to read). Frederic loved the long Free Pauper meetings with at length discussions, but Blossom was always eager for action and frequently impatient to get to work. At night, Blossom continued to work through the gambling circuits, sometimes with her new friends of the Free Paupers and sometimes alone.
2 ½ years after joining, the Free Paupers began to discuss more radical ways at undermining the influence of the Merchant Princes. At one meeting the group began to debate the use of the arcane magic loadstones holding the city aloft and whether the Merchant Princes could maintain power and wealth without access to this type of magic. Eager to find more information and without consulting any of the group, Blossom scurried off to try and look at one of the loadstones herself. As she was poking around, she was caught by a contingent of the city guard. She managed to slip away by running off and weaving through the crowds of people towards the Music Preservation Hall. When she recounted what happened to the Free Paupers, the group decided it would be best if Blossom left town for a while so that her actions wouldn’t be traced back to the group.
Before she left, Gresla who had been mostly a mystery to her up until that point gave Blossom a tiny rapier and a small patch of cloth embroidered with the letters “FP”. Blossom was told to travel along the Long Road and seek out Orholin, a dwarven man in Mara who was an acquaintance of Darsuhulda. After the long journey, through which Blossom spent much of hidden away in travelling caravans, Blossom arrived in Mara two weeks ago and has spent most of it being a helping hand around Orholin’s smithy. Blossom spent much of her time on the road listening to merchants and travelers and thinking of ways to alleviate the exploitation of the poor by the various powers of the world around them. At night in Mara, she dips into taverns and alehouses, challenging just about anyone to a game of dice.
