Vinny receives a courier from Sergeant Germaine Vilroy bearing the message: Is that new guild worth any salt? Something needs looking into, and I don't much care for my other options, so I'm hoping you and some other Irregulars will do. My good word will be helpful to you. Please return this message with a yea or nay.
Despite knowing that Vilroy is on the take with the Boromar Clan crime syndicate, Vinny replies that he's down to clown.
Later on at the Hippogriff and Child tavern, headquarters of the Wednesday Knight Irregulars adventurers guild, a job comes in. It's the same job from Vilroy. Ebb and Ixione volunteer, and after everyone gathers some weaponry from the WKI's ramshackle armory, they head out.
The trio meets Vilroy in Upper Central plateau, near Lyrandar Tower in the Highest Towers district. She tells them that a warforged named Coal who lives all the way down in High Walls want to report a crime, but that Vilroy would rather not venture down there. So she tells the group she'll pay them 25 galifars each up front to go down and talk to Coal. If they bring Coal up to her, she'll give them an additional 50 gp each. They should find Coal in a warforged establishment called The Cog Carnival.
In addition to the money, Vilroy gives each member of the group two Feather Tokens and a writ of the Sharn Watch, authorizing them to investigate the crime in her name for one day.
The group immediately hails a skycoach (Vinny pays the 9 sp) and heads down to High Walls. After promising a young halfling refugee a sovereign to lead them to the Cog Carnival, Vinny ends up giving the kid 2 sp upon safely delivering the trio to the warforged establishment.
Once inside, the party discovers that everyone but Vinny and Ixione are warforged. Vinny goes straight to the bartender: a female warforged named Ingot. He offers a silver sovereign if she can direct him to Coal, who Ebb has already spotted in the back of the establishment.
When the group approaches Coal, she is immediately suspicious. Vinny shows her the Sharn Watch writ, but before they can discuss the situation any further, a bolt of fire slams into the wall above her, and a group of kobolds busts into the Cog. "Kill her!"
Immediately, Coal darts away from the party, shouting, "I knew you were setting me up!" She jumps through a back window. Ebb, Ix, and Vinny follow, seeing the quartet of kobolds behind them at the door of the Cog Carnival. They also notice what appears to be a human woman pursuing Coal.
