VI. Hobgoblin Ambush

General Summary

The party successfully rested within the confines of Gault's Rope Trick, but returned to a compound that was much more alert than it had been when they hid.   The party found themselves outside a room containing three giants...
Priest of Grolantor
Subchief Garou + 2 apes
Thardapus, Stone Giant, Hill giants, Dev blinds some guys
Hobgoblins, goblins and bugbears show up   The party then attempted to stealthily descend to the subfloor of the compound, but got caught coming down the stairs and alerted all the giants waiting down there. Subchief Garou commanded his Giant Apes to attack. While the party was confident at first, their courage slowly whittled down as tens of Hobgoblin Tusk Takers, Iron Shadows, and Bugbears showed up to support the Giants.   Before the battle started, Gault gave Lady Kohinoor a look that seemed to say do not step in front of me again.   Tharduin transformed himself into a Giant Octopus.

"I came out here and took a risk, but I wasn't afraid because I knew you would have my back. You're a force of nature."
-Dev Lightpaw
  Tharduin winked at him.
"You're going to want to take a step back for this."
-Tharduin Oakheart
Despite Gault's non-verbal warning to her, Lady Kohi chose to step in front of Gault again, this time to prevent him from getting hit by a hill giant’s greatclub. Gault got a mean look on his face and stepped away from her to prevent her from doing it again, but as he did he was targeted by a different giant who threw a boulder at him, dealing massive damage.
"Let Lady Kohinoor protect you!"
-Dev Lightpaw, to Gault Harrow
Tharduin took massive amounts of damage through various animal shapes.   As the Hobgoblin forces flooded the hallways, the Valandian attempted to disorder their front lines by casting Grease, causing many of them to slip and trip over each other. Once he had them in his view, he hurled a javelin of lightning through their ranks. Those that hadn’t been tripped up by the grease or the lightning wasted their time, Confused by a spell from Dev.   Kohinoor attempted to Turn the Tide, but her efforts did not seem to be enough. Soon after, the Valandian was knocked unconscious by an Iron Shadow.   The last of the Giants had been slain, but the party was still surrounded by Hobgoblins. Dev threw up a Fog Cloud as a last minute defense, but things were beginning to look dire…
