Fatemakers Session Ten: Pleasantries before Disaster, if you please
General Summary
The Fatemakers, content with their haul, make their way back to the Great Sea Skyland, seeking to make contact with Captain Emilio Gearhart. They find his ship, but not him, do some grocery shopping, and eventually all end up at the Sleeping Giant, a popular pub located in Madrigal's marketplace. They find Gearhart there, drinking and having a good time, and he informs them that they shouldn't have too much trouble pawning off their cargo to the Kosians. The party has a wonderful night, each doing their own thing. Xander ends up going home with a pretty barmaid, named Sasha. Kellan ends up on babysitting duty, with a drunken Evan McDermitt following him around for the night. Volundr has a blast by himself, watching the perfomances of Gingertail, a one-woman-performance by Olly Valen. Olly is joined at some point by Hide, who performs a ceremonial dance from Ezai in accompaniment. As the night is ending, Hide offers Olly a place on the crew. She tells him she'll think about it, before making her way out. Hide leaves the Sleeping Giant, and hears shouting from the alley behind the Sleeping Giant. It's Olly! She's been cornered by two hulking men, who seem to be making undesired advances. Hide steps in, helping Olly, and killing one of the men. The other dashes away, as Hide takes Olly's hand and runs back to the main street. There she admits those were members of the crew she had originally planned to travel with, and decides to accept Hide's offer to join the crew of The Raven's Fortune. After another day of relaxing while the ship's Airship Buoyancy Manipulator gets recharged, and the Fatemaker's, with their new addition, set out for Kankos. The journey will take them approximately 9 days. On the 5th day, of travel, disaster. A ship can be seen, no frigate, but still much larger than the Raven's Fortune. It seems to be fast approaching, and looking through the spyglass, Kellan discerns the crew to be wolves from the Bear King's army, still awakened. As this revelation unfolds, Xander can feel the Red Journal, untouched for weeks, begin to vibrate and burn. She opens the journal, and it informs her that the wolves seek the journal, so that they might unleash the fragment of Epitaph encased inside. The journal deceives Xander, tricking her into a ritual to release itself from it's leather cage. Under the guise that he would help them, he guides Xander through the ritualistic process, which takes ten minutes. Too busy with the oncoming ship and receiving no information from Xander, the rest of the crew stands by, at their battle stations, while the ritual is underway. All the while, the hostile ship approaches and in the final seconds of the ritual, engages with the Raven's Fortune. Cannon shots are exchanged, and things appear grim. Moments after the engagement, Xander finishes the ritual. A being, in shape similar to that of Epitaph, as seen when His message was delivered, appears from thick flowing blood erupting from within the journal. The being shakes off the blood, revealing a definitively physical form, cackling at his successful ruse, and taunting the Fatemakers, before plunging his clutched claws directly into Xander's chest, through her torso and out the back. The party watched in horror as Xander died there, turning to them in her final moments and muttering "I told you I didn't have much to live for."
