Session Log: Shadows Within and WIthout

General Summary

After the disastrous mission to stakeout the cathedral and the punishment that came from it, Galen and the gang got themselves equipped and took on a simple delivery job on behalf of the Shadow Slayers Guild. After a few days of downtime, the party convene at the Western Gate and take on the delivery from the representatives of House Loirafene and are instructed to deliver the sacks of food to Amelia Tanbrow. After a strange conversation, the group set off into the wilderness of Blightfall.   Much of the journey proceeds without issue, Peter using the time to play some of his best songs to speed the mission along. As the day grows long however, it soon becomes obvious that the group won't arrive at the Pits until after dark. Matters are made worse when a fell wind blows and manages to extinguish one of their lanterns, opening the group up to an ambush from a passing pair of Shadow Beasts. A dire fight takes place, one that narrowly avoids claiming Galens life. Some combination of the dark magics that converged during that fight made it impossible to administer magical healing to the fallen cleric, resulting in him being carried the rest of the way to the Pits by the remaining party members.   After arriving at the safety of the Pits, the party are led to the triage center and their wounds tended to. They are permitted to rest here for the night and do so, sleeping in shifts in order to protect their precious cargo of food sacks. With the coming of the dawn, they deliver the food to Amelia Tanbrow, a feisty Dwarven woman with a foul temper and fouler tongue. After securing payment and a promise to compete in a drinking contest later that evening, the party headed into the ruins of Frengra and took in the sights of an ancient magical city.   Much of the tour itself was pretty lackluster, due to the heavily plundered state of the ruins. What once was an extraordinary resource is now close to dried up, with only one true mystery remaining: The Vault. Sealed with ancient magic, the Vault bore an inscription of two parts: the first an easily deciphered riddle, and the second an incomprehensible sentence of pure gibberish. The party, particularly Hatise, spent a decent chunk of time experimenting with the door, but to no avail. After being investigated for two decades it seems it will take longer for the party to unravel its secrets, and so they set out to look for work. It didn't take long for them to overhear the raised haughty tones of one Ulysses Fairview: museum curator, prisma apprentice and former member of House Fairview. After negotiating a contract, the party agreed to escort Ulysses back to Bingtown the following morning.   The rest of the day was spent in separation, with Hatise trying to identify the flow of magical items from the Pits, Galen throwing a series of tantrums amongst the tent town, and Freja and Peter heading to the tavern early to get stuck in. As evening approached, Peter struck up a few tunes and earned the favour of the Barrelkeeper, earning him free drinks for the duration of the drinking contest with Amelia. The pair of drunken small humanoids eventually retired to her tent. Meanwhile, Galen and Hatise overheard some snippets of interesting conversation coming from a pair of unusual Dwarves.   Morning came and found the party separated into those who can keep appointments and those who certainly cannot. Ulysses, unimpressed, threatens to cut the parties pay. This leads the timely members of the party, and the slightly less late Peter, to leave without Galen. Hatise left the late cleric a magical message, and so they set off. This untimely delay could have had dire consequences, as the escort group found themselves three hours away from Bingtown by the time the sun had set. Luckily, none of their valuable light sources were extinguished. This time.   Ulysses, not willing to be slowed down, insisted that the group be permitted to escort him all the way to the Museum in Old Town, despite the consternation of the City Guards. Upon arrival, he administered payment immediately and reluctantly gave the party a limited tour, before shooing them away.   The night drew to a close with Hatise visiting the Bounty Board at the Shadow Slayers Guild and showing an interest in the Sewer Job, while the remaining three decided to have a drink at the Golden Umbrella, with a carefree bit of bard competition between Peter and Fairtongue, followed by Freja stalking and murdering said bard. In their death throes, Fairtongue lost control of their facade and revealed themselves to be a changeling. #ChangelingSpleensForSale #NoCrimeLikeAHateCrime
