Session 16: An Unsafe Safehouse
General Summary
The party traveled toward the safehouse. As they neared its location on the map, they encountered a black Dragonborn in a hunting blind in a tree. However, there were no signs of game in the area. The party was suspicious of the dragonborn, who, in turn, seemed hesitant with the party. They learned that his name was Kulthath and he claimed to be hunting, but felt that he was being guarded in what he told the party. The party eventually agreed to pass and leave the dragonborn behind in his blind. As the party cautiously passed the dragonborn, who cast a spell which revealed a hidden mark on Rieta that she was unaware that she had on her. This mark revealed to the dragonborn that they were sent by Malthus and he introduced himself fully. Kulthath revealed that the sigil was a sign that they were working for Malthus, though he also mentioned Cinead--unaware of what happened to him. The party revealed to Kulthath that they were sent to lead the group out of the safehouse as it was no longer safe. They did not tell Kulthath what happened to Cinead, however. Kulthath led the party back to the safehouse, which was a well-hidden cabin at the edge of the hills. There they met Chenbyn Humbleaf, a Halfling who poses as a young human girl, and Slink, a goblin whose features are just a little exaggerated. Kulthath informed them what had happened and Chenbyn decided to remain at the cabin to continue her masquerade, but Slink would go with Kulthath and lead those in the safehouse along the northern passage through the mountains to the Kingdom of Louth, where they will be out of the reach of the Duke. Tucked away in a hidden basement of the safehouse was Wood Chop, a Kenku spy for the organization, Wren Carwyn, a human farmer who was infected with lycanthropy, Jennapak Thraxis, aka, Smiling Jenny, a red dragonborn weapons smuggler, Dyfed Brodrick, a human who abducted a human child and gave her to the hags in the swamp apparently with the knowledge of Cinead, and Jorrunde, a tall Northlander pirate raider. None of those in the safehouse were fully armed or armored and they only had the bare minimum of supplies when gathered to leave. Levi tried to determine which of the group was the lycanthrope and noticed that Dyfed smelt of sandalwood and cedar, but quickly realized that Wren was the one who was infected. Bolvaic was immediately intrigued by Jorrunde, the giant woman who was ambiguous, if not amused, in returning his flirtations. The party left and traveled along the hills with Kulthath acting as the guide for the group. The party made camp the first night. During the night, the group saw a large winged beast that flew over their campsite and recognized it as a wyvern, but it did not attack the party. Slink slipped away to scout in the morning, but when she returned to the party, they noticed that she had a large item hidden with her. It was a wyvern egg. She said that she had found its lair and took the egg, as it would be worth quite a bit to interested parties wishing to train a wyvern from birth. The party convinced her to leave the egg behind, burying it along the way. Finally, the group approached a rope bridge that spanned across a large, deep chasm with a river below it. The bridge was not traversable by the party’s horses and so the horses were to be left behind. Illevaere spoke to Tertius’ horse, Strawberry, and the horse told Illevaere to watch over Tertius and sometimes he’ll want to move faster and just to take a few quicker steps, then go back at the usual pace and he won’t know the difference. Illevaere put Strawberry in charge of watching over the other horses--a duty that he accepted. The bridge swayed in the wind and the party felt it was safest to cross one at a time. Most of the group had made it across, but as Bolvaic crossed, the angry wyvern swooped down in the valley and made to attack him on the suspended bridge.
