The Field of Ruins Report

General Summary

It was the 20th of Olarune, 994 YK. Cyre was particularly hard pressed, facing invasion from Karrnath in the north, and an alliance between Breland and Thrane to the west. Marching south of the usual battlefields in western Cyre, the Brelish-Thrane force overwhelmed Kennrun and surged through Darguun, entering the area that is now known as the Field of Ruins.   The Cyrans had been faced with an impossible task, to delay the invading force long enough for reinforcements to arrive, and to preserve as much of their force as possible. Through the clever application of Warforged, the Cyrans had repeatedly whittled away at the invading force with a series of hit-and-run attacks. It was in the aftermath of one of these attacks that we found ourselves.

  • A unit of the Queen's Guard were being pursued through the foothills by a unit of Warforged, led by a Warforged Juggernaut.
  • The party were tired, they'd been running for hours and had failed to lose their pursuers.
  • The party discussed what to do, and came to a united decision to stand their ground and try to defend their position.
  • Daine and Terfel blocked a choke point, Jode hung back to provide healing as needed. Pierce and Lei took the high ground to rain arrows on the approaching soldiers.
  • The warforged charged, and the Juggernaut plowed right through the defenders.
  • Combat was drawn out, looking bad for the party. Lei got a clutch thunderwave in.
  • The Mourning Happened!
  • The Warforged withdrew, the party fled to Darguun.
  • The party returned to the Mournland to look for survivors.
  • They didn't find any survivors, but in the ruins of Metrol, they encountered some living burning hands, and a small army of potato-like leeches with legs.
  • They almost died to the burning hands, and Daine was almost killed by the leeches.
  • Reluctantly, the group decided the ruins were too dangerous, and fled.
  • They encountered other refugees on the road, who told them that there was a refugee camp in Eastern Breland.
  • The party arrived at the camp, where Brelish soldiers were handing out food, tents, and blankets.
  • The next day, Prince Oargev arrived, with Terfel's wife and child, and gave a rousing speech.
  • Daine, Lei, Jode and Pierce left to take Lei to Sharn, where her betrothed lives. Daine gave Terfel his cloak, thinking it wise not to advertise their allegiance.
  • Terfel never heard from Daine, Lei, Jode or Pierce again.

The Mourning

A sound that you can only describe as thousands of glass windows shattering all in unison erupts from behind you, momentarily drawing everyone's attention. The warforged all look up at the sky in amazement, the conflagration that has erupted in the clouds reflected in their eyes.   Towards Making, a towering light reaches for the sky before dispersing outwards in a way that reminds you very much of a mushroom. Gigantic shards of what seem to be glass erupt from the ground in all angles, shattering each other as they fight for the limited space, and you can already feel the trembles in the ground despite being over 200 miles away from the epicenter of the blast.   The shockwave reaches you, taking everyone off of their feet. The air is hot and scorches your lungs, but the terrain seems to shield you from the worst of the blast. You're all dazed for a moment, and Terfel begins to come back to his senses first. His eyes focus on the warforged juggernaut, now standing over him, fists poised to beat him to death. The warforged makes eye contact with Terfel for several seconds, then shakes their head and lowers their fists. "These people have lost enough", the juggernaut softly states, and then retreats.   A curtain of dense grey fog can be seen rapidly spreading from the strange storm of glass in a pyroclastic-like flow that rivals the raw power of a volcanic eruption, but with nothing natural about it.

Prince Oargev's Speech

"Weep, oh nations of Khorvaire, for the Jewel of Galifar is no more. You have finally completed what you started when you rejected the true and proper right of Mishann to ascend the throne of Galifar. With your jealousy and petty ambitions, you have brought this disaster on us all!   Weep, my brothers and sisters, for our homes and our families have been eliminated in a foul and cowardly way. Do not let Cyre be forgotten! Do not let the Day of Mourning end! Not until we have discovered the villain. Not until we have made the villain face justice for this heinous crime. Not until Cyre's children are once more safe and content within their homeland.   Weep this day, my fellow Cyrans, and never forget. But tomorrow... tomorrow we begin to hunt down this villain, to demand justice, and to rebuild beloved, cherished Cyre. Tomorrow! Tomorrow we shall go home!"
