Session 408 – Wizel’s Doom
General Summary
28th of Nolus (Summer) 728TR
The story so far
A group of heroes battle the evils haunting the beleaguered Kingdom of Kanday.
Sir Odin, a former Erkan of the Checked Shield, has been raised to knighthood.
Remy, a former master thief and active gambler, has won and lost fortunes.
Abaddon has traveled the wilderness, perfecting his impressive martial skills.
Edelina, a scholarly priestess of the god of Knowledge Save K’Nor, joins them on their adventures.
This is the continuation of Session 406 – A Most Righteous Inquisition.
The heroes have legally salvaged goods from the merchant ship, the Rosemary, wrecked after a freak storm ravaged the bay a few days ago. Meanwhile, Remy recovers the illicit goods hidden amongst the cargo at the behest of Silas of the Aleathian Thieves Guilds. The former smuggler spends most of this session with his criminal contacts.
Location - The wilderness east of the Eryn River in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 1 – The False Dragons
Abaddon, Odin, and Edelina hire a wagon from the nearby Ordyne village, load it up with recoverable salvage, and travel to Aletyne Manor across the rough frontier. Suddenly, two large forms appear in the sky; the heroes first think they see Wyverns, but as they dive down, they are Eunlann or The Razor Wings. These Ivashu have bony blades attached to their wings. The wagon driver hides under his wagon while the heroes prepare to fight. The Razor Wings dive and slice, letting out a terrifying screech as they descend from the sky. Using the wagon as cover, the heroes eventually fell these flying monstrosities.
At Aletyne Manor, the party hires boats to ferry the salvage across the Eryn River to the City of Aleath. Then, the recovered goods are stored in a bonding warehouse.
Location - City of Aleath in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 2 – The Litigant
The heroes do not have time to contact the various merchants, factors, or owners of the salvage to give them a chance to recover the goods (at a sizable fee). In fact, they don’t even know where to start, so Edeline suggests hiring an expert, especially someone skilled in contract law and with foreign contacts. The obvious person is Mylene of Sarin, the city’s most skilled Litigant, although this young woman does charge the most. Mylene is more than happy to take on this work. “I have spent too long traveling internationally of late, and my recent trip to Kaldor was not a pleasant experience, so I want to settle down for a bit in this peaceful city,” she tells the heroes. Most of the salvage is owned by merchants from the Thardic Republic, with a small portion from the Kingdom of Rethem, both of which she has many business associates.Mylene is bright, friendly, charming, and remarkably well-informed. She knows the heroes, some of their exploits, and Odin’s recent appointment with the Bailiff of Eryna Manor. “I like to keep track of exceptional people,” she comments. "Speaking of which, would you be willing to undertake a small task for a client? He pays well.”
Her anonymous client wants to recover a long-lost artifact, the Ebony Stylus, believed on the corpse of one Wizel, the Boneforger. An especially vile necromancer specializing in golem manufacture who dies in the later stage of the Theocracy of Techos. Mylene gives the heroes a brief history lesson.
In 575TR, the evil Theocracy of Tekhos named Andasin Kand (the future King Andasin I of Kanday) an outlaw and executed his father for treason. Andasin escaped into the Mimea Hills with a small army of refugees and his father’s retainers. For over a decade, Andasin proved to be a thorn in the Theocracy’s side, allying with the Gozdya barbarian tribes who offered him shelter in the early days of his rebellion.
So hated and feared, Andasin was targeted for assassination. Many warbands crossed the Eryn River to hunt him down, but most were destroyed. One such Warband was led by Witzal the Bone Forger. Witzal was a devoted Morgathic priest, necromancer, and infamous for creating skeletal monstrosities. Witzal’s Warband, enhanced by his foul sorcery, raided several Gozdya settlements, flaying captives in depraved, unholy rituals.
Andasin and his Gozdya allies laid false trials, trapping Witzal and his army in a small bog, and enacted revenge. Many of Witzal's soldiers were drowned or trapped in muck after a flash flood, some say summoned by a powerful Gozdya shaman. Andasin and his allies slaughtered the entrapped survivors. Witzal’s body was never found, believed drowned in muck.
The small marshland has since been renamed Witzal's Doom and is believed to be a cursed, corrupted bog almost always shrouded in mist and shadows.
Location - Witzal's Doom in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 3 – The Nefarious Bog
The party starts searching along the Daven River through the Wizel’s Doom, an especially foul marshland. They spot an overturned boat, maybe a small fishing vessel washed up in the recent storm, and investigate. Nearby are two large and savage boars, which attack. Odin is ill-prepared for their furious onslaught, but Edelina’s magical healing saves his life. The boars are butchered.
Further, in the bog, it becomes more atrocious. The plant life is stunted, the water acrid and covered with a smelly haze. Then, out of the foul water, three figures emerge, long-dead warriors of the Theocracy. One of the bog mummies is particularly bizarre, a strange amalgam of several forms twisted together in one huge shambling mass. Abaddon and Odin battle the undead while Edelina keeps her distance, offering magical support. As the strange amalgam is the most dangerous, with its multiple arms failing about madly tearing into the heroes, Abaddon and Odin focus on the threat first and hack it to pieces. Then they focus on one of the more “normal” bog mummies, but one of the cunning undead does the unexpected. It leaves the melee and attacks the unarmoured Edelina. The gulmorvin's vicious claws badly hurt her, but, in desperation, she uses her magic to appear 50ft away, evading being eviscerated. She retreats behind the other heroes who finish off their opponent and destroy the final undead.
Badly wounded and risking being infected with some foul disease, the heroes leave the bog to rest up. Hopefully, their friend Remy will be along shortly to reinforce them.
To be continued.
