Session 11: Travels on the Great Blue

General Summary

The party found themselves on the sea, heading towards the capital of Frankonia, Ponvarus. Dormaruk was now standing at the helm and steering his new ship. Nakor and Kazagal had long gone to sleep below deck, whilst Frances had written a journal entry. The sergeant then went down and woke the sleeping Goliath, bringing him up to the deck to have a discussion. She confronted him about his lies, and after a while, the jötun broke and told her everything. A lengthy discussion followed, about morals, ethics, money, and FAMILY. I the end mutual respect arose between the two.   The party then went back to bed and waited until morning before doing anything else. When morning came, Dormaruk finally went to bed and slept until noon. When he woke up, the party gathered to discuss how they would proceed. They discussed the dispersion of responsibility. the meeting was cut short however when an island was sighted. Whilst Captain Dormaruk left to deal with this, the rest discussed how they would approach the drama that occurred with the Aeryonian king. Frances wanted all who were present to prepare a written statement, something that Nakor refused to do.   When Dormaruk came out on deck he too could see the moon-shaped island in front of them. On further inspection, he could see that there was a strange-looking rock on the beach inside of the bay. The minotaur thought back and remembered stories about wizards hiding islands with magic, and when the magician died the magic began to fade until the uncharted islands became visible again, making it seem like they appeared out of nowhere. This enticed the captain and when the rest of the party joined him on deck he proclaimed that he was going to go over there to investigate. Nakor and Kazagal joined in immediately, whilst Frances reluctantly joined and brought with her two of her men. Dormaruk brought the tiefling Jack and the leonin Garthur with him as well.   The group got in one of the smaller boats and roed their way to the shore. Whilst entering the bay they saw the remains of ships that hadn't discovered the island in time. They disembarked on the beach. Frances and her men immediately begun to chart the island's fauna, flora, and geography. Dormaruk and his men begun to investigate the strange rock. Nakor and Kazagal on the other hand entered the woods to search for treasure. The captain and his men joined them after realizing that the rock seemed to have been placed on the beach on purpose.   In the woods, Kazagal discovered a strange man-shaped tree with no roots. Nakor and the jötun began to investigate the strange wooden body. Dormaruk soon joined and they all decided to leave it alone. Kazagal and Nakor walked over to the other side of the island where the jötun gracefully descended the cliffs to investigate the shipwrecks. When he didn't find anything of value the pair decided to walk the long way back and search the beaches.   Meanwhile, Dormaruk, his men, and the White Sentinels and managed to move the rock and began to dig in the crater that was left. There they found an ornate chest with a strange lock and a riddle engraved on the lid.

“Thou who knows not how to open this wooden lid might want to tryeth again after a wondrous drink.”
The group immediately tried to decipher it, resulting in Dormaruk fetching a beer and a flask of the Drug of Drugs from the ship. He then asked Jack to try and open the chest first after drinking the beer, and then after drinking the drug. This resulted in the drunk and jittery tiefling trying to open the chest by setting it on fire.   The same second the tiefling attacked the chest, the wooden golem that had been standing idle among the trees activated and went directly for the chest. Jack, who was high as a kite, tried to hug the golem, resulting in it hitting him in the face causing him to fall unconscious and dying to the ground. A fight broke out after the golem also hit Dormaruk in the stomach. However, the captain seemed to be the only one who could hurt the golem with his magical axe, no matter how perfectly their attacks were executed. The frustrated Frances instead layed her halberd aside and took out a flask of oil. In a unnaturally swift motion she first threw the flask at the golem and then used her tinderbox to set it ablaze. Her men followed suit and each threw a flask of oil at the golem, one of which missed. Garthur on the other hand ran over to check on Jack and realized he was dying and needed help.   This enraged Dormaruk who swung his magical axe with such force that it severed one of the golem's arms. Frances realizing there wasn't much she could gave one of her men her medical supplies and told him to aid the sailor. At that moment Nakor and Kazagal arrived. The prince told his companion that he had been right about the noices and then nonchalantly shot a ball of fire at the construct, accidently creating a blue, green and purple explosion of lights, flowers and butterflies in the process. The golem was in an instance engulfed in flames and a second later all the fires had burnt out, leaving a black shell of charcoal.   After Jack had been stabilized Nakor went over to him and used his heavenly powers to heal the sailor's wounds. When they had made sure that he was okay, Dormaruk turned back to the chest and the riddle. After trying to bring the chest underwater he realized that the magical lock reacted with liquids. After some attempts, he tried with the beer that Garthur had in his canteen, with opened the chest instantly. Inside he found 200gp, a magical spyglass (Telescope of Etherialness), and a bag of holding. The group then surveyed the rest of the island before leaving.   They spent the rest of the day getting familiar with the ship. Particularly the magical mermaid figurehead, which seemed to swim around all over the ship and have a mind of its own. Nakor even tried to converse with it. It couldn't speak but still managed to answer his questions. Dormaruk asked around about it and found out that it supposedly was the spirit of the ship made manifest in the animated figurehead. After the tricky mermaid had tried to scare him he had a friendly chat with it and ensured that he would take care of her.   Night went by, and the next day the ship passed the border and left Aeryon and now travelled the waters of the Mageocracy Sa'resteece. Later that day they passed under the colossal and ancient Bridge of Thuul. As per tradition Dormaruk, as the captain, carved a mark in the lower parts of the bridge. During the day they discussed their plans for when they arrived once again. That's when they found out that Kazagals son Timmy was actually studying in Frankonia. Among other things, they began to make plans to possibly visit him. As they passed the waters of Sa'resteece, they rapidly approached the area around the famous city-state of Nova Aera, where they planned on making a stop. They would arrive some time the coming day.
