Session 30: Terror out of the Blue

General Summary

After the departure of Kazagal, Timmy, and Sir Horzin, the party sailed into the Yelanids, heading into the rivers of the Yelanids. They followed the river to a famous tavern called the Spring of Peace in order to find some clues about what has happened in the area. Since Dormaruk decided to stay on the ship for the rest of his foreseeable life, Jeanne and Nakor entered the tavern by themselves. There they were approached by a half-elf who seemed to be looking for a ship and a crew to use his martial skills to earn a living as a mercenary. This was Conn Dhuine, a freedom fighter of Killbarrow in the Osnarian Quintarchy. After getting to know one another a bit better, he decided to join the Swift Mermaid, who on his initiative traveled north to Harasan from where Conn had heard of the attacks happening.    Traveling under the surface, to Conn's surprise, they arrived in Harasan and were warmly welcomed. After waiting for Nakor to swim to the shore since Dormaruk had thrown him off the ship, they made their way to the fort of the local Emyr. After disclosing their business, they were let inside and were welcomed personally by Emyr Tahef Yelanid, one of the Sultane's many sons. The emyr gave them some food and told them all he knew. Apparently, a storm had appeared to the north several months ago, and this storm sometimes moved south and then back again, like a wave moving on the shore. When it does villages become raided by pirates who destroy and burn everything in their path.    The party agrees to kill these pirates and stop the raiding. They walk back out on the streets and seek out a witness named Aledain Al Ashbehein. This half-elf had seen the ship in the distance through one of his many spyglasses. With this new information and their confidence in the Swift Mermaid's ability to traverse underwater, they set off to chase the storm. As they traveled along the coast, they passed several large plantations and villages brimming with life. As they reached the mouth of the northmost river of the yelanids they passed one of the land's largest plantations. That's when the storm turned southwards and as they headed out into the open waters and sunk beneath the surface they saw the ship described by Al Ashebehein.    The Swift Mermaid surfaced behind the enemy and they attacked. The pirate crew consisted of mostly humans with covered faces and were led by a blue dragonborn. They yelled out a chant that their god was with them as they charged. At first, this seemed to be little help, as they were slaughtered by the weathered crew of the Swift Mermaid, especially Conn who seemed to be as comfortable fighting as he was breathing. Then a huge shadow appeared above them, and a stream of lightning hit the mermaid, killing three of the crew and making a hole straight through the hull. Jeanne narrowly managed to escape.    As the fight went on Dormaruk saw the damage the Mermaid had suffered and called for a retreat. Unwilling to give up, the party kept on fighting, until the shadow came back around, and blew Nakor out of the crow's nest. In order to try and discourage the enemy, Nakor transformed himself into a large bronze dragon. Agitated the shadow revealed itself as a huge blue dragon who quickly beat the transformed Nakor down. It then seemed to prepare for another lightning breath attack, which convinced the rest of the party to retreat as well. At the very last second, Conn jumped from the enemy ship as the mermaid sank under the surface where the ship's magic protected them from the lightning.    The party collected themselves on the ship and witnessed how Nakor, still in dragon form managed to swim under the pirate ship and sink it. As it sank they saw charred corpses of pirates that weren't killed by the party.
