Journey to Akbyset IV: The Crypt of Tef-Amen

General Summary

A lizard and Teleptyon saw each other. Teleptyon thought quickly and cast his voice into the distance to create a distraction and the party fled. After they settled down again, Asbjorn’s watch was uneventful, as was the next day’s travel.

They saw the glint of precious stones on the edge of what appeared to be a cavern and convinced themselves that maybe some of those gems are jade and would help Alex. Against the better judgment of Teleptyon and Theo, the barbarians led the way into the mouth of the cavern which turns out to be a deeply weatherbeaten tel.

Theo called upon his gods to open his eyes to evil, and his eyes glow with theurgic light. He saw a diffuse evil in all directions as far as the eye can see. He prayed and touched Asbjorn’s shin which began radiating a holy light. The party smelled mothballs, cinnamon and cumin.

Once more Theo reached out to his gods and cast his gaze around the structure looking for traps. The party began systematically checking rooms. The first door down a hallway to the left was locked and the Oameni could not unlock it.

The next door contained a single ghoul which the Ükhiflin, Asbjorn and Theo dispatched together. Theo pointed out a large trap of an odd shape at the end of the hall between the party and the double doors at the end of the hall, but even knowing that it was present, Riven and Alex were unable to disarm it. Finally frustrated, they decided to have Asbjorn throw the ghoul’s corpse into the affected area. A great clanging as a spiked grate crashed from the ceiling, obliterating the ghoul’s body and crushing the floor tiles.

Alex began systematically checking the other doors for locks and the barbarians each took one to search. They found 200sp each. Alex had them pull the grate out of the way so he could access the double doors and the door to the southwest. He used his thinnest blade to pop the crossbar holding the doors shut and heard the sound of it hitting the floor echo across a large chamber, but he did not open the door. Alex failed to open the southwestern door, and Asbjorn could not kick it down, but Kegho did with ease. They found another untrapped coffer but this was filled with trinkets, ritual items, two sets of clothing (fine, ritual) and two canopic jars. Alex squinted and was able to read the cartouches as Kha-Tef-Amen and Ib-Tef-Amen but could not glean more information from them. Theo is able to recognize the canopic jars as resting places of the organs of mummified Khemians.

Kegho kicked open the double doors revealing a raised dais with a sarcophagus in the center of the room, a mound of coins to the left and a caved in portion of the chamber to the right.
