An attractive statue

Anna convinced the party to head back into Obo’laka’s tomb and check out the northern secret door. Opening the door, Anna sent her cat lucky on ahead to explore the area. The cat walked north and found a room with a Rusty statue and then another room further to the north with a fountain. The cat followed the hallway East and then south and then back west to complete a circle.

Jeter and Luigi stayed in the tomb while the rest walked north with Anna and Tyrena leading the way. As they entered the first room, they saw the rusty statue of a knight standing at the west end of the hall, griping a large iron shield. Shards and flakes of rusted metal covered the floor around the statue’s feet. Anna and Tyrena felt the strong magnetic pull of the statue. Fortunately, they both had the strength to resist and they made it to the hall continuing north. Lucky, Jaquette and Al were all able to make it across. Anna removed all metal items from her person and then went and punched the statue until it was destroyed.

A somewhat tempting fountain

After the statue was destroyed, they party spent some time staring at the large fountain crusted with moss in the middle of the northern circular room. They gazed at the three marble maidens standing in the fountain, holding pitchers out of which water flowed. Rolen felt a compulsion to tell the party “I wouldn’t drink that.” Lucky was torn, Tyrena avoided the water.

Anna had her cat drink the water and it gained 5 temporary hit points. Still, Lucky Rolen and Tyrena avoided the water. Lucky took 2 vials the fountain water and Anna took a drink. She felt as if a greater restoration was cast and then Anna turned into a man. Anna took a 2nd drink and turned back into a female. Anna put her items back on and the party headed down the hallway and then headed east.

A windy tunnel

They walked around the grand staircase looking down into darkness. As they made it to the eastern side Anna spotted a dwarf on the staircase one level down wearing green mask of a bearded devil, just like the face they saw in the main entrance. They ignored the dwarf and proceeded around.

Tyrena peered down a hall heading north. She saw Carved birds soaring across the walls of the corridor. Blocking the passage near its northern end was a large adamantine propeller with five sharp blades. Tyrena lit a torch and threw it about 25 feet to the base of the propeller. She was then able to see the hallway extend another 10 feet and then into another tomb room. Stepping into the hallway Tyrena heard a click and then a hum and noticed the adamantine propeller start to spin. It spun slowly at first and started to speed up quickly. Tyrena stepped back out of the hall and the hum stopped and the propeller continued to spin although it started to slow down at a much slower rate that it sped up.

Lucky walked down the hall along the walls as the blade slowly slowed down, but was still spinning. He tried to jump through the spinning blades, but the blades caught him, doing 43 points of slashing damage. The blades stopped shortly after that. Jaquette made a swarm of locusts appear and she guided them to the blade to try to gunk it up but that didn’t succeed. Lucky carefully walked back along the wall and carefully through the blades towards the party. Anna gave Lucy her removable rod and Lucky put it next to the blades preventing them from moving.

Wongo’s tomb

With the blades stopped, the party went down the hall and through the blades without any further injuries and into another tomb room. A deep pit opened up at the entrance to the tomb, with a stone sarcophagus resting at the bottom. A snarling monkey-like creature decorated the sarcophagus lid. Beyond the pit, three treasure chests sat on stone daises. The chest on the left was carved of black onyx, the middle chest was made of rusty iron, and the chest on the right was cast of silver and glistening with frost.

Lucky opened the frosty chest and saw a key on the inside of the chest. No matter how hard he tried the key didn’t turn. Jeter reminded the party of Acererak’s warning “The keys turn on the inside only.” Lucky climbed into the box, closed the lid and turned the key and a frosty silver button appeared on the sarcophagus. He did the same thing in the other two chests and a similar thing happened with a different button appearing on the sarcophagus each time the chest was closed, and the key turned.

Jeter climbed inside the rusty Iron chest and turned the key. Lucky climbed inside the frosty chest and turned the key and Jaquette climbed inside the Onyx chest and turned the key. Al and Anna pushed all 3 buttons on the sarcophagus at the same time. A powerful force hammered Jaquette, but she was able to resist it and the chest opened. Lucky took 20 points of frost damage. Every item Jeter had on him, made of metal, was turned to rust. The stone sarcophagus turned into a thin crystal sarcophagus. Inside they saw a mummified monkey holding a mace of terror. Lucky smashed the crystal and the mummified Monkey arose holding its mace aggressively.

Wongo’s mummy

Lucky attempted to command the monkey but it didn’t seem to work. Al cast firebolt and Rolen immediately threw a flask of oil onto the mummy. Tyrena finished it off with her handaxe. Anna picked up the mace and red smoke seethed from the head of the mace, forming the outline of a monkey with a long tail. With a roar, the smoky apparition leapt at Anna, screaming, “Let me in!” Anna said yes and her eyes grew a little wild and deranged.

Jeter grabbed the ropes they had secured as the rest of the party left the room. Anna left right before Jeter and as she was walking through the blades she grabbed and deactivated the immovable rod. Jeter, right behind her saw the blades starting to spin and said, “You jerk!” Jeter jumped through the blades but just like Lucky, he didn’t quite make it through safely. Jeter took 45 slashing damage. As the blades started to spin faster and faster, they felt the wind pulling them back into the blades. Anna and Jeter got caught in the wind, Anna was able to walk away but Jeter started to get sucked into the blade. Jeter grabbed ahold of Anna’s foot but was losing his grip. Lucky threw Jeter a rope and the whole party pulled him to safety. Jaquette glared at Anna and cast healing on Jeter, healing for 33 points.

The Stone Skull

They looked down the eastern hall and saw a giant stone skull crusted with moss jutting out from the end of the passageway. A flame flickered within each of its eye sockets, and a view into a chamber beyond could be seen through its open jaws. Anna peered through and saw skulls crusted with dried mud glowering from niches cut into the walls of the tomb. A stone sarcophagus was standing at the center of the chamber, its lid adorned with a coiled serpent carved in relief. Behind the sarcophagus, resting atop a marble pedestal, was an ornate crystal box with a small humanoid skull floating inside it. Anna sent Lucky the cat in to scope around, as it went through the jaws of the skull one of the flames flickered out.

Lucky examined the skull’s jaw and saw a hinge. He tried to put pitons into the jaw of the skull but realized that wouldn’t stop it. Anna took her adamantine hammer to jaw’s hinges and destroyed them. Lucky crawled into the tomb through the open jaws and the second flame in the eyes was extinguished.

Moa’s Tomb

Seeing the skull in the crystal box, Jeter remined Lucky of the warning “Speak no truth to the doomed child.” Lucky walked into the room and heard the voice of a young girl in his mind. She asked, “Where am I? Why can’t I see anything? Did my father send you?” Lucky responded with no truths but also with no compassion. Lucky told her that her sister was dead, and someone probably poured acid in her eyes. Feeling no compassion or consolation from the only person to speak to her in many years she flew into a rage. The skull floated out of the box as a flame skull and 6 swarms of undead spiders filled the tomb.

The party was quick to react. Lucky used the staff to cast magic missiles. Rolen used one of his stars to cast magic missiles too. Tyrena went on one knee, pulled out her laser rifle and finished off the skull with one shot and took out a swarm of spiders with her second shot. Jeter cast confusion on 2 of the swarms. Jaquette cast ice storm in the room of the spiders and did considerable damage to the remaining spiders. Lucky and Jeter each took 9 additional points of cold damage. Anna took out one of the swarms. One of the spider swarms bit Lucky for 4 points damage. In response Lucky took pointed his finger at one of the swarms and went “pew” and took out one of the swarms with a fire bolt. Rolen had a ghastly hand appear and squished a swarm of spiders with its fingers. Tyrena looked directly at the last remaining tiny spider and from 20 feet away threw her tomahawk and split it in half.

Lucky and Anna tried to open the tomb and failed. Tyrena walked in and simply pushed the lid of the tomb and saw a faded cloth bundle of something and a Staff of the Python resting on top of the bundle. Jaquette seeing the staff of the python picked it up. Green smoke billowed from the staff, coiling around Jaquette like a serpent. A sibilant voice whispered in Jaquette’s ear, “Let me help you! I promise to be good.” Jaquette said okay and the smoke disappeared.

Warning on Level 2

Lucky had enough and headed to the grand stairwell. There he met up with Luigi and the rest of the party followed. They all headed to the 2nd level down. On the 2nd level they saw a bronze plaque that read:
The ring is a path to another tomb.
The dead abhor sunlight.
Only a jewel can tame the frog.
Bow as the dead god intoned.
Into darkness descend.

The devil face pit

They traveled up the northern hall and came into a small 15 X 15 room. The walls and floor of the room were cracked and carved with images of terrified humanoids falling. Set into the middle of the floor was a stone bas-relief of a bearded devil face, painted green. Forlorn cries echo from the black void of its gaping maw. The party looked into the darkness and said “nope.”

The gravity ring.

They walked back and headed down the Eastern hall. At a four-way intersection, the corridors to north and south curved upward and out of sight, but with no rails or steps to allow them to be climbed. The corpse of a half-human, half-goat creature in robes sprawled ten feet to the north. It gripped a staff tipped with a bronze goat’s head. Lucky recognized the staff as a staff of striking. Tyrena checked the goat man’s body and saw that it was slain by a weapon that does slashing damage. Luigi took the staff. Searching the body, they found Delvin's Journal , a spell book and a pot of ink.

Anna went north, up the curving corridor and arrived at the other side (as if walking completely around a vertical circle) but when she arrived back at what looked like the exact same intersection, she found that the body and the party were gone. She went back around the circle and found the party again. She walked around the loop again and then continued a 2nd time and came back to the party again. Remembering the warning from Acererak Jeter pointed out that “The Ring is a path to another Tomb.” They decided to leave it for now.

The Wine room

They left the ring and continued into a room to the east that smelled of wine. On a checkerboard marble floor, a gilded coffin sparkled in sunlight streaming down from the chamber’s vaulted ceiling, which arched twelve feet overhead. Four huge stone gargoyle heads, their mouths agape, protruded from the walls. Jaquette said: “The spirits are telling me there is nothing in this room that has any symbolism of the nine gods.” Tyrena thought it best to leave and Rolen suspected a trap. But Anna seemed a bit more reckless and wanted to check it out.

They all felt tired as it had been a very long day. Rolen wanted a safe space and more importantly he asked they keep to their normal sleep schedule. Luigi read the journal and Rolen heard that the Yellow Banner discovered a doppelganger in their group! Anna laughed and cast Mirror image. Seeing 2 Annas, Rolen left a little paranoid. Al snuck up on Rolen and surprised her. In response Rolen threw one his stars from his robe onto him dealing 15 points of force damage and ran away. Luigi caught up to Rolen and settled him down. Lucky cast Magnificent mansion on the ceiling in the hall and the party climbed in and rested.

Passage to another tomb?

They party went back to the ring and found the corpse gone and the area was fairly well cleaned. The party spent some time to understand how the ring works. They discovered that there is a two-way portal at the very top of the ring that transports to a different dimension that seems to contain a duplicate of the Tomb of the 9 gods. They surmised that the Tomb that smells like wine may be legitimate in the 2nd dimension. Jaquette said: “The spirits still tell me there is no symbolism of any of the 9 gods in this room.” The rooms seemed identical.

In the 2nd dimension Wine room, Luigi detected abjuration magic around the coffin and Illusion magic creating the sunlight on the ceiling. Anna dispelled the magic on the closed coffin. Anna opened the coffin and saw a plaque inside that read “Drown your sorrows.” Lucky broke out the Alchemy jug and offered everyone some ale. They found nothing else in the coffin. Luigi ran to the first dimension Wine room and detected the same magic. Jeter joined Luigi in the Wine room in the 1st dimension and Rolen and Anna went down but not into the room. Luigi and Jeter opened the coffin.

Wine Trap.

As soon as the lid was open and the artificial sunlight struck the inside of the coffin, A stone slab lowered over the exit way. Jeter and Luigi did not move, and Anna waved bye bye to them. The mouths of the 4 huge gargoyles opened and wine began pouring into the room at a rate of 1 foot per round. They started to search the room and Luigi detected a secret passageway behind the Southwest Gargoyle face. Jeter tried his chime of opening on the stone slab, but it failed. As the wine reached 3 feet deep, Jeter felt something try to attack them. Luigi lit his lantern of revealing and still saw nothing in the Wine. Jeter tried to place a window on the stone slab door, but it failed. Luigi started punching at the creatures attacking even though he couldn’t see them. Anna wither her head listening to the stone slab door called out, “How’s it going in there?”

Jeter took his pit patch and put it on the floor at the base of the stone slab door. The slab fell into the pit and 2,618 gallons of wine rushed out of the room in a torrent, sweeping Anna and Rolen down the hall. Anna fought against the current and went into the hall of the gravity ring. Rolen was swept away and wound up pinned against the railing of the grand staircase with one of the Wine weird creatures smashed up against him and taking 8 points of bludgeoning damage. Jeter cast a lightning bolt through the remaining 2 Wine weird creatures in the room. With the wine dumping into the lower levels and the flow lessened, Anna went over to help Rolen. Rolen, frightened, tried to snap into the Astral plane but was very surprised when the spell failed.
