Examining the SW area of Level 3

After their short rest the party made their way west, back across the wooden platforms to the stairway Tyrena had previously seen. Anna perceived the outline of a secret door and opened it. They saw a fifteen-foot-wide, fifteen-foot-deep pit dominating the chamber. At the bottom of the pit, an eight-foot-tall clay figure stood motionless beside a stone treasure chest. A silver key hung from a cord around the figure’s neck. Two nine-foot-tall stone statues stood atop plinths on either side of the pit. A third plinth against the south wall stood empty. One of the statues depicted a hooded and bearded male figure with his left hand held high, index finger pointed up. The other portrayed an armored male knight with his gauntleted right hand extended, its palm facing inward toward the knight. Tyrena recognized the knight as Torm and the Wizard as Azuth.

Jeter examined one of the statues and saw that it could be rotated. They discovered a wall of force covering the entire pit. Luigi took a spoon from his backpack and placed it on the wall of force. Anna went and stood on the empty plinth and told Jeter to turn the statue. Rolen said “That’s too risky.” Jeter agreed and went on exploring the room. He saw a hallway to the West, a door to the north and that purple moss all over the place. Anna spotted and eye in the purple moss but when she went to get it, it was gone.

Jeter went down the western hall and found the corridor ended in a large door with a round mirror set into its surface. Ten circular indentations, each about an inch across, surrounded the mirror. The mirror was so perfectly ground he could clearly see every detail of himself. He touched the mirror and left a smudge. Trying to wipe it, just made it worse, so he turned and left.

Tyrena opened the stone door north of the golem pit. She saw the room was shaped like a drum or cylinder lying on its side, with its south end tapering toward the small stone door they were looking through. Carvings of demons decorated the stonework, with flickering flames in all their eyes. Jeter looked in the room and spotted an opening in the ceiling on the north end of the room opposite the door. Luigi examined the door expecting a trap and saw nothing. Jeter and Tyrena entered the room.

Triggering 2 traps at once.

Anna got tired of waiting on the plinth for someone to turn the statue, so she got down, walked to the wizard statue of Azuth and turned it clockwise. A loud gush of wind was heard as the Clay Golem was somehow teleported from the pit below to the plinth where Anna formerly stood. Just after that the door to the room that now contained Tyrena and Jeter closed. The cylindrical room began to spin tumbling Tyrena and Jeter.

Luigi tried with all his might but the door to Tyrena and Jeter would not open. Anna let go of the statue and it sprung back to its original position. She turned it again and a gust of wind was heard at the plinth, but nothing happened. Rolen rotated the statue of Torm and the Golem who hadn’t yet moved off the plinth was transported back to the pit below. Rolen’s eyes grew wide as a plan had formed in his mind.

Tyrena stumbled slightly and was only slightly bruised, then quickly recovered as the room continued to rotate. She looked closely at the carved demons in the stonework and saw that their mouths were open. She braced herself. The demon faces exhaled a burst of sparkling dust from their mouths. Both Jeter and Tyrena had closed their eyes just in time avoiding the blinding magical particles. Jeter however could not keep up with the rotating drum and tumbled uncontrollably. As he tumbled Jeter took a window patch from his robe and threw it onto the door, but it did not stick.

Luigi asked Rolen what the plan was and Rolen quicky explained how the statues turn and they want to get the key to open the chest. Luigi informed the others that their friends are on tumble dry and he hooded his lantern. Anna said, “I’ll stand on the plinth and look pretty, you go over there and do the manual labor and rotate the statue.”

Tyrena stumbled but caught herself again. She pulled out her crowbar, jammed it into the door and with every bit of her strength pulled on the crowbar. The muscles in her arms, back and legs seemed to swell and shake as everyone heard the shattering of 3 separate locks and then the door burst open, stopping the rotation of the room. Luigi stood slack-jawed looking at Tyrena as she stood there, her muscles pumped and glistening with sparkling dust and sweat. Just behind Tyrena, Jeter fell from the ceiling of the room to the floor saying, “I’m okay.” Jeter, seeing the hole in the ceiling, walked up the wall and saw long hallway.

Getting the chest open.

Luigi Rotated the wizard statue expecting to Send Anna down to the pit below but instead she was just pushed off the plinth as the Large Clay Golem appeared with a gust of wind. Anna ran away and then back and jumped right up to the golem and she grabbed a hold of the key that was on the chain around its neck. She held onto the key and dangled there for a bit. Rolen then rotated the statue of Torm and both the Golem and Anna were teleported to the pit with a loud swoosh. The Golem tried to hit Anna but continued to miss. The others stared at the situation and waited for a signal from Anna that she was ready to go back up. Anna took out her adamantine Warhammer and whaled on the chain over and over until it broke. She grabbed the key and swan dived over to the chest. She quickly opened the chest and grabbed two more crystal eyeballs, one pale green and the other pink. She then gracefully climbed up the golem as it was hitting her, and Anna banged on the wall of force. The party generally supposed this was the signal, so Rolen turned the statue and Anna was teleported safely back to the plinth.

Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder

With the 10 crystal eyes in hand the party walked over to the large round door with Anna in the front. The others hid in the hallway and only Jeter peered around the corner to watch what Anna did. Anna carefully considered the eyes and put them in one at a time in rainbow order. After each one was placed in a socket, it melded into the wall and started to glow. Jeter watched the reflection of Anna slowly deteriorate as she put each eye into the wall. Anna herself looked okay, but her reflection became more and more undead looking. Jeter looked at himself and saw that he looked hideous. When all 10 eyes were in the wall, the reflections of Anna and Jeter looked like zombies, but they in reality felt and looked no different.

The crystal eyes disappeared into the wall and the door ground upward. They peered into a domed, candlelit room 25 feet high. The polished marble floor was so perfectly reflective that it created the illusion of standing at the entrance to a sphere. Nine alcoves filled with glittering treasure were open along the walls. In the middle of the chamber, a large spherical object hovered under a black drape 10 feet above the floor. Rolen’s eyes grew wide as he backed out saying “We need to leave now, that is clearly a beholder!” Everyone else hesitantly stepped into the room. They saw a skeleton with a pentagon head run away from the party and slide across the floor. Luigi convinced Rolen to stand at the entrance of the room and Rolen agreed if they first cleared the purple moss in the hallway. Luigi agreed and the burned the moss in the hallway.

The covered sphere

Luigi then slid across the floor and looked underneath the tarp and saw what looked like a metal sphere. He called back and said, “That doesn’t look like a Beholder.” Anna went towards the treasure and pulled out the portable hole. Jeter suggested she wait a sec. Tyrena caught the Skeleton and bound it.

Luigi ran up the ceiling and dropped down onto the sphere. With an amazing show of acrobatic and monk skill, Luigi ran around the sphere grabbed the ends of the cloth from the bottom and pulled it around to the top. Afterwards, he was holding the loose ends of the cloth in his hands while the sphere was still covered around its bottom now. He called out to the others, “Whatever we’re going to do now, we should do it quick.” Jeter went and grabbed a bead sitting in one of the alcoves. Anna grabbed a gold coronet shaped like an octopus with mother-of-pearl eyes worth about 2,500 gp. A voice echoed from the room in deep speech that said, “What ugly and imperfect creatures you are, you have touched what does not belong to you.”

The uncovered sphere

Rolen looked up and saw at the far end of the room near the ceiling, an invisible beholder staring down at the party. Rolen yelled, “I told you so” and pointed to the Beholder, then covered herself with a tarp. Luigi felt his magic constitution bonus disappear and took some necrotic damage. Jeter also felt necrotic damage. The party heard the voice again “You are no match for Belchorzh the Unseen’s terrible eye rays!” Luigi, not able to see the beholder, but seeing Rolen pointing, let go of ½ of the drape hanging over the sphere and was able to throw it over the Beholder draping it so all could see.

As soon as the sphere was uncovered there was a low hum in the room as the sphere became active. The Sphere was a powerful magnet, so powerful that both Tyrena and Rolen flew off the ground and slam into the side of the sphere. As Tyrena began to get sucked towards the sphere she grabbed the Skelton and held it beside her. All there were restrained.

Belchroz (Pronounced Bel-korj)

Belchorz the beholder, now covered by a tarp, spoke again, “You fight like flumps.” Rolen, while stuck to the sphere, took out a ruby vile and tossed it to the ground where a Fiendish spirit appeared and attacked the beholder. Tyrena pulled out the wand of wonder and made it rain lightly in the room. Anna slid under the Beholder and threw 2 daggers at it, and Jeter telekinetically held the tarp on Belchroz. The beholder disintegrated the tarp covering it. His anti-magic eye cast over the northern part of the room. In deep speech it said, “Where’d that demon go?” Rolen said in deep speech, “Look behind you.” Luigi, twisting fate, made sure the deception worked and the Beholder turned around. Once out of the anti-magic field, the demon re-appeared. The beholder zapped Luigi with necrotic damage and nearly disintegrated the demon.

Luigi ran up the ceiling and hopped down on the Beholder’s head. His lantern of revealing shown upon the beholder for all to see now. Luigi pummeled the Beholder with is staff. Rollen took out his hand crossbow and fired 3 shots at the sphere. With the metal tips, the bolts all automatically hit, damaging the sphere. The demon attacked the Beholder. The Beholder used his death ray on the demon totally obliterating the demon. A Beholder eye popped out of the wall and scared the heck out of Jeter. In his frightened state Jeter used telekinesis to smash the Beholder’s face to the ground. All 10 of the eyestalks on the top of the Beholder’s head looked at Jeter.

Tyrena pulled out her tomahawk and automatically hit the sphere with it. However, Tyrena could not take it off the sphere once it was attached. Frustrated, Tyrena punched the sphere. Anna cast rope trick and climbed up the golden rope disappearing into an extradimensional space. The Beholder used its death ray on Jeter and sucked almost all his life out. Jeter lost his concentration on the telekinesis and the Beholder was once again free to move. The Beholder hit Jeter with a Slow ray leaving Jeter Frightened, slowed and with just 8 hp remaining.

Belchroz tries to flee

Belchorz lowered his body and told Luigi to get off. Luigi refused. The beholder frightened and then charmed Luigi. The Beholder moved 20 feet towards the door and asked Luigi again to get off his head and shutter the lamp. Luigi got off the Beholder’s head. However, Luigi then ended the charmed the condition and kept the lamp lit and ran to the other side of the room.

Rolen shot 3 more bolts at the at the sphere. The sphere cracked and fell to the floor, shattering both the sphere and the Marble floor. Rolen fled out of the room into the hallway. The Beholder used his lair action to have purple appendages come out of the walls trying to grasp everyone. Luigi was restrained but the others were able to break free. Jeter noticed that the Beholder stopped attacking and he told everyone “Stop attacking and he’ll leave us.” Rolen yelled back “I don’t want him coming toward me!”

Tyrenna said “I don’t think we should let him leave.” She fired 2 shots at the Beholder. Purple ooze began flowing out of the wounds. Anna popped down from the ceiling and tossed 2 daggers at Belchroz and then disappeared back into the ceiling. The Beholder floated towards the door and turned around. It’s anti-magic field revealed Anna on the ceiling who floated down like an angle. The bolder used one eye ray to make Anna Frightened and another to knock Tyrena asleep. Belchroz used his Enervation Ray to knock Luigi down to 2 HP. Luigi ended his frightened condition.

There’s a Beholder in the hall.

Belchroz backed into the hallway completely filling the passageway. Squeezing through slowly he got close to Rolen and he said “uh hm… excuse me.” Rolen said “I can’t have you crawling around the dungeon, it’s too risky” and fired two bolts into him. The bolts were fully loaded with everything Rolen could do. They did 102 points of damage and killed the Beholder, and the invisible ball of a body completely sealed the hall.

Tyrena finished off the restrained skeleton by curb-stomping it. The removed the head and tossed it towards Rolen but it hit the invisible Beholder blocking the hall. Rolen, able to clearly see it, started harvesting the eyestalks from the Beholder. The rest of the party collected the treasure (see Treasure Found below.) Tyrena got an excellent grip on the Beholder’s face and pulling it by its teeth, she tensed her muscular arms, small beads of sweat dripping down them, and hair flowing, she heaved the large the Beholder towards her so that there was now 5 feet of it poking out from the entrance and 5 feet of it still jammed in the hallway. The others tried to help her get the rest of it out, Rolen pushing from the other side, but they didn’t help much, and couldn’t move it fully out of the hall.

Anna suggested they harvest the creature and cut it up. She pulled out 6 of the Beholder’s teeth. Tyrena used her nature skills and perfectly removed the Beholder’s main eye. All of the Beholder’s body parts remained invisible. They went ahead and carved a path through the beholder. Covered in invisible beholder guts they made their way to the safe room and took another short rest.
