Unfinished Business - The Finale - Socrates Gains a "Mother"

General Summary

In the finale of the New Champions dungeon-crawl, the team of heroes found themselves face to face with a monstrous ooze-creature. However, it was surrounded by countless demon frogs, which were swarming onto her, tearing out pieces of her ooze-flesh with every bite. But instead of attacking the ooze creature, Faust suggested that maybe she wasn't evil. He had been 'hearing' her in his head, calling to her Stone Golems -- her children -- for help. And the golems weren't attacking the heroes either.   With that, Sandcrab swooped up stones from the floor of the cave and covered up a large group of the frogs with them, now buried in rubble. Others went to work splattering frogs. Nemesis deftly swung her sword through several dozen. Ghost did the same with her fists, flying through several handfuls of the demon frogs. Wildthing let out a deafening roar. Maximum Resistance electrocuted a swath of them. All the while, the mind-sword of Windwalker flurried across the room slicing into the brains of the bedeviled creatures.   Guts and blood flying across the room, the heroes were now thoroughly covered in splatter. As the commotion began to dissipate, the team moved closer to the ooze creature which had been under attack.   But at that moment, the last bastion of frogs dug out from the rubble which had covered them and they let forth a large belch of sickness into the air -- a "Burp of Discombobulation" -- as almost the entire team became enveloped with the corporeal hands of demonic forces which gushed from their croaking mouths, holding many of the heroes tightly in place.   Several of the team were able to pull themselves free of the demonic hands, but Faust remained for several moments, tightly held in their swirling grasp -- unable to move, unable to will his powers into effect. Ghost, who had not been caught in the frog's belching mist, dashed directly into it and straight at the remaining frogs -- splattering them into oblivion. The threat was over, though their stench remained.   And so did the ooze-creature in the corner of the cave. Faust went up to the ooze and began to speak, gently caressing it with his finger. But the creature recoiled. He knew she couldn't understand him anymore.   Maximum Resistance went back to the repair bay and logged onto the main computer terminal again, searching for clues as to how the "Cave Mother" operated. His efforts, combined with the biological analysis of Sandcrab shared with Socrates over the comm-devices ultimately revealed that the Cave Mother was a sentient magical manifestation of technology, combined with earth from the cave.   Finally, with the technology component identified by Max on the DEMON lair network, Socrates was able to immediately intervene and "take-over" the Cave Mother. He began to speak from the mouth of the oozing Cave Mother, explaining to the team:   "In the years after DEMON vanished from the cave, overactive power sources began to interfere with the DEMON portal, allowing an open-bridge for demonic creatures to enter the cave. But at the same time, the magical material combined with the electricity to animate the cave itself...bringing to life the ooze creature known as "Cave Mother" who began to fight against the demonic forces by raising up stone golems and other rock-like forces."   After three year-long stale-mate between the Cave Mother and the Demons, the New Champions arrived and unwittingly changed the tide of the battle in the favor of the cave.   And now, with Socrates taking over the Cave Mother's computer sub-routines, the New Champions set out to clean out the remainder of the lair and to repair the damage they'd caused to their new home.   For Seth Rogers, the Last Silver Avenger, a PRIMUS mission to clear out the underground DEMON lair that had started more than three years ago had finally come to a close.   Watch the video of the session below:
