Trouble in Chinatown - Part 4 Encounter with 'The Ancestor'
General Summary
After their late night rescue of Jasper Liu, the New Champions followed the energy trail of the ancestral spirits, tracking one of them to a forest several hours south of Grand Rapids, near a small town called Hamilton, MI. Upon arriving at the scene, two individuals were standing outside of a truck, looking at the floating orb. Due to her expertise in the magical arts, Nemesis immediately recognized this as an Ancestral Spirit. However, it had already been released from the protective artifact that had previously contained it.
As the team pursued the two individuals, Maximum Resistance noticed that their wristwatches were generating a significant amount of energy which covered them entirely. With that, Lil'Rocket zoomed around both of them, grabbing and removing the wristwatches with ease. Almost immediately, the facade of their fake appearances faded and the team could now see two aged warriors carrying swords. However, seeing the team of six superheroes, the two warriors attempted to run away in escape.
Nemesis pursued one of them while Ghost grabbed the other. All the while, the orb continued expanding in size. Maximum Resistance attempted to encapsulate the orb, but its pulsating energy continually broke out of the barriers. Ultimately, Max could not contain the orb and it escaped. The sheer force of the orb's expansion was the equivalent of an earthquake with energy spreading for miles in every direction. The team was sheltered behind a large boulder, but the two warriors who attempted to escape were obliterated. The energy rippled across the forest and outward for miles, surely devastating nearby wildlife and several small towns. The orb of ancestral energy circled the area for a few seconds until it landed above the rocks...now an enormous spinning mass of earth and rocks.
Leading the charge, Ghost flew into the spinning field of earth and rocks and was immediately paralyzed by the emanating energy. Even worse, the waves of energy racked her body with painful tremors - over and over again. Unable to move, though remaining conscious, she communicated with the team about her predicament...and about the appearance of a radiating colossus that had suddenly appeared inside the energy field. As he levitated high in the air with legs folded, a low hum reverberated from him. Thinking quickly, Sandcrab ripped one of the large trees from the ground and used it to swipe Ghost out of the energy field.
Nemesis tried to communicate with the god-like creature, but it was disinterested in a conversation, plainly stating, "I am The Ancestor, called forth to confront the Destroyer of this world. My path has already been set. Though many will die, the one they call Dr. Destroyer willbe destroyed."
The team pleaded with The Ancestor to reconsider, but he ignored them and began to walk slowly toward the city, obliterating everything in his path. Recognizing the path of destruction his course would take, each of the team began to scour the countryside and cities identifying and removing everyone in his path. As the team saved the lives of thousands in The Ancestor's path, they each worked together to strike one blow in unity against the seemingly god-like creature.
Ghost flew with a boulder at full speed, releasing it at him from above. Nemesis grabbed another boulder and hurled it at him from the side. Wildthing commanded the winds behind that same boulder thrown by Nemesis, adding to its destructive force. Sandcrab found a series of power lines in the path of The Ancestor and timed a blast of a fire hydrant to coincide with The Ancestor's contact with the power-lines - an electrifying scene. Added to that, Lil'Rocket struck with a blast of electricity and Maximum Resistance hurled a bolt of lightning. Each of the team, keeping pace with the plodding Ancestor, surrounded him and struck with heroic fury. Their combined precise blows were devastating...so much so that The Ancestor, who had previously disregarded the New Champions, was returned to his orb-state and his energy field dissipated.
Thinking quickly, Lil'Rocket zoomed over to the crate with the artifact that previously contained the ancestral spirit. Racing it back to Ghost, she flew up and scooped the orb into the protective container...further danger now averted.
But the loss of life was immeasurable. Socrates confirmed via news reports about the earthquake and the energy blast that emanated for miles around. Towns and wildlife, roads and buildings, all destroyed. But it could have been much worse.
