Session 53: A Leaf on the Wind into the Desert Report

General Summary

27th of Haelynir 1524 Continued   The group heads back to the manor to identify things and get some rest. Karl sends Steve a message to let him know the group is safe.   When the group arrives back at the house Fargrim goes upstairs to send a message home and head to bed, Lily goes upstairs to read and Karl starts to spend two hours identifying items. There are two gems in the bag and 480 platinum. The two potions - Hide from animals and potion of Bear's Endurance. The two scrolls - Cure wounds and hold person.   Wand of Knock Wand, very rare (requires attunement by a by a spellcaster)   The user can cast a knock by using one charge. The wand has 3 charges a day and regains up to 1d3 charges at dawn.   -   Wand of Daylight Wand, artifact   While holding this wand, a 60-foot-radius sphere of light spreads out from a point on the end of the wand. The sphere is bright light and sheds dim light for an additional 60 feet. Completely covering the affected object with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the light. If any of this spell’s area overlaps with an area of darkness created by a spell of 3rd level or lower, the spell that created the darkness is dispelled.   -   The undead rod is the same as the one found in the Wellmore estate   -   Comet Staff Staff, very rare   This Staff has 4 Charges. While holding it, you can use an action to expend 1 of its Charges to make a spell attack roll against a creature, with a range of 30'. The staff unleashes a bout of psychic energy, barely perceptible to the naked eye as a faintly sparkling purple flare. On a hit, the creature takes 5d10 psychic damage. If this damage forces them to make a concentration saving throw, they do so with disadvantage as their mind is ravaged by the eldritch whispers of deep space. The wand regains 1d4 expended Charges daily at dawn.   -   Pyromaniac's Ever Glowing Ember Uncommon Wondrous Item   This 6 in diameter glass orb emits enough light to light 20ft area in bright light and sheds low light for 15ft beyond that.   Uses Prestidigitation only to be able to light candles, torches, and campfires.   Spell - Firebolt at will.   -   Front Line Shield Shield, very rare   +1 magical shield.   As a reaction you can parry an attack adding an additional +4 to your AC.   -   1 Seal of the Matron Mother: Corresponds to a particular Retriever controlled by the Matron Mother's house. The Seal can be activated by a Drow wearing the Tiara of the Matron Mother by speaking a secret word, usually found in the Matron Mother's Book of Secrets. The Retriever will follow any order related to retrieving an item or creature located in the Abyss. If the Retriever is sent to the lair of a Demon Lord or if it runs into a powerful demon on its journey (25% chance), it does not return and the seal becomes nonmagical. Otherwise, the Retriever returns with the item or creature in 1d4 weeks.   -   1 Tracking Orb. A creature holding the orb can make a DC 20 Intelligence (Arcana) check. On a failure, the Orb is indecipherable. On a success, the creature learns the direction and distance of the Retriever's Quarry if they are on the same plane of existence, and the location of the Retriever's master.   28th of Haelynir 1524   The 28th of Haelynir is a clear and warm day. At 7am scones are served while Fargrim and Karl talk over breakfast about the finds from the safe house. Karl wants to use one of those keys the apprentices found and get into Wellmore’s laboratory. They talk about going to the mage guild to look at the axe and return the items, as well as talk to June and the apprentices about some jobs they could leave with them while the group is travelling.   Lily takes a moment to talk to Uqaviel to share that she has found some helpful information and to give the Succubi a time limit on when they would need to help come up with a way to stay out of trouble. She stops in to chat with Karl and Fargrim where diets are discussed, hot weather gear is mentioned and a reminder to go to the jeweller to pick up commissioned items.   Afterwards Lily took Xeldarix outside to have breakfast in the tree. While Erin and Karl discuss her ship and crew. Erin will be looking to touch base with Viona for Karl and Karl says they will try and contact her as often as possible even if it’s Fargrim sending the message. When Lily and Xeldarix come inside the group leaves to head to the mage guild. On the way the cursed items from the hags are brought up and the group is reminded they are still needing to be dealt with. They go up to see Master Burke. Karl draws a map and the known areas are explained by the group. The items are returned and Fargrim offers to test the Dwarven waraxe. Burke goes and gets a training dummy after his remarks to have Erin be the dummy is turned down. With a mighty cleave the axe almost seems to hum with excitement under Fargrim's hands. It slices through the dummy like butter. It's so easy fargrim accidentally hit the floor with the momentum of his swing. The stone floor cracks with the force of the blow and the faint sound of stone falling and hitting the ground before it's heard.   Xeldarix is excited and wants a turn to stab the dummy. A new one is obtained for her attempt which is far less dramatic then Fargrim’s. Fargrim asks if he could borrow the axe for “field testing” and leaves his hammer in exchange. Afterwards Lily and Xeldarix go to see Steve while Erin and Karl go to see Master Dale and Fargrim uses one of the practice rooms.

Karl asks Master Dale about a scroll he found in the library. It was Master Dale’s. He had misplaced it and ended up scribing a new one. Karl negotiates a trade for the misplaced scroll and the one Master Dale re-scribed in exchange for Command Undead and Summon Swarm scrolls. Master Dale takes the Summon Swarm in exchange for the newly scribed scroll and tells Karl to keep the one he found since it was his fault for misplacing it in the first place.   As they leave, Karl checks in on Erin since she has been so quiet this morning. He gives her the option of waiting for him at the manor but her preference is to stay with him. She will be gone for two weeks if not longer trying to raise support for Karl and getting in contact with General Viona.
Lily goes down to see Steve and give him the Acacia Staff so he may better protect himself in a fight when he can’t rely on his spellcasting. Afterwards Lily and Xeldarix wait for others in the lobby.
Fargrim goes to the practice room to cast Legend Lore on the axe. He learns:   This is the Waraxe of a Dwarven Thain named Gavil from the Silvertome clan. He created this axe when Elves and humans originally fought over Cerilia long ago. Dwarves tried to stay out of it, but both humans and Elves dragged them in one way or another for their mining and crafting abilities. As a result, Gavil crafted his weapon so only a true Dwarf could wield it as he would not have one of his enemies turn his own weapon against him. His goal was to get all his clan to do this after he was successful with this one but their hold was discovered and destroyed before he was able to do so.   With a name Fargrim heads downstairs to go and look into Gavil Silvertome.
Karl goes down to see the apprentices that take jobs but only June is there. He commissions an item to help him see in the dark and gives June his spellbook for a few hours so she may copy Darkvision from it. He also asks June to look into the method the Circle of Willow use to hold mages capture and drain their magic with the help of the other apprentices in the group. Karl gives June 300 gold to fund the research.   As they leave June to her work, Karl turns to Erin again as they walk to discuss private things. Including how old the sea elf is. She's roughly 135 years old.
As Lily and Xeldarix waits in the lobby Fargrim comes downstairs and seems to be heading for the library. Lily offers to help Fargrim when he mentions doing some research. He tells Lily some of what he learned about his new axe. As Lily finds a book that seems to be about the Silvertome clan, Fargrim and Lily receive a magical message from Karl.
Karl goes to see Master Barnes with Erin. He explains what Xeldarix saw in the egg. They discuss their options and consider disabling some of the runes to try and talk to whoever is in there. He sends a message to Fargrim and Lily telling them the plan and inviting them up to the practice room for this. They go set up to wait for the others.
Fargrim gets the book set aside for himself with the receptionist before heading up with Lily to the practice room. There Karl explains they want to remove the stasis rune to try and communicate with the individual. Fargrim and Lily agree to support him with this.   Karl is able to dispel the stasis rune though it does try to resist him. There he speaks with a young girl named Phobe. He tries to upset her in hopes of breaking any act she is using to pretend to be a young girl, however it just upsets her. Karl is able to get some information from her about her parents, where she is from but can’t get any good information about why she is in the egg. The group decides to get the girl out but Fargrim does lay down a magic circle first. Just in case.   Karl and Master Barnes dispel the remaining runes. The egg suddenly grows in size and the last two runes fade. Suddenly all three of the faded translucent runes pulse. They pulse quicker and quicker before the egg shatters and in the centre of Fargrim's magic circle lay a child. She must be about 7 years old. Her skin is light and her hair is red, tied into a short braid. She's clearly breathing but isn't moving.   Between Lily’s healing and some talking from Karl Phobe awakens. They ask her to walk to them out of the circle. She seems to be rather unsteady. She reaches the edge of the circle and stops as if walking into a wall. She grabs at her chest like she's in pain. Her arms have clearly moved beyond the edge of the circle when reaches up to grab her chest. She complains it hurts.   Fargrim casts Detect Evil and Good. He senses around the girl's heart there is a very small reading of celestial and aberration. The group asks Phobe about her past and learns she dreams of bad things that will happen. Apparently she was blamed for many of these bad things. Upon asking for more details and learning of her own near death experience, Phobe reveals that the mage build is going to burn down. Karl dispels the magic circle and takes Phobe’s hand which shudders in his. They lead her outside while Lily separates to tell Steve about the situation.   The group sits outside. Phobe can smell smoke and Karl fears they missed a crystal with a pit fiend in it. Karl tries to get Phobe to focus so he can try to learn more about the vision but in the end she falls asleep on him. Lily comes out and after talking with the group uses the mask to have a look around. She sees ghosts are giving Phobe a very wide berth. They consider sending with Erin back to Trie, but instead Lily offers up getting there instantly via a spell of hers.   Karl asks Master Barnes to cast identify on Phobe while she sleeps. The group discusses their plans for the day while the ritual happens. Master Barnes reveals when the ritual is done that Phobe has Mage Armour, Clairvoyance and Resistance against psychic and physical damage. The group resolves to get their shopping done quickly. Fargrim and Lily will go get everything that is needed while Erin and Karl watch Phobe. At 9:15am they separate.
Phobe, Karl and Erin go to a bakery. He gets some extra croissants for the guild Masters. Afterwards they run into Master Sparrow, Master Barnes and Master Eelwind outside the guild. They chat with Karl about the current issue. They ask Phobe more about what she sees. She says that Master Sparrow, Master Barnes and Master Eelwind are covered in burns. They take Phobe back up to the practice room to have a more private conversation.   When they arrive at the practice room they start going into wild speculation about how the fire might start. However, Karl is distracted by remembering the medalial that he took from the Retriever. He pulls it and after failing to figure out who it was after, he gives it to Master Barnes who declares it was after Fargrim.   Once that is dealt with they continue to question Phobe about the fire. She touches Steve and Sam during this process of talking to them, her eyes turning black for a moment when she does. The fires start in many places. Some of it will start inside of people. They decide to take Phobe out for a walk to see if anyone else is at risk of being the start of the fire as well. Phobe points out Master Burke and Master Dale as they pass the lecture hall.   Karl stops by June who is annoyed at the interruption and informs him babysitting is not an option for their paid services. After finishing their tour of the library. Phobe complains about being bored and wants to play with dolls. Master Barnes goes upstairs to get some of the toys she has in her office. Karl takes Erin and Phobe into a private study area of the library.   As they enter the study room Phobe's eyes flash black and she looks up at Karl with a frown and holds up a doll of Erin in her other hand who isn't moving. "I thought you said you wanted to play."

Lily and Fargrim stop by the jeweller, get two gems valued for Karl and picking up the two items that were commissioned by the group. Afterwards they head for the port market to arrange for some hot weather clothes. Lily naturally feels the urge to pay for some extra services with the cloths and wait with Fargrim for those to be done. Meanwhile Fargrim picks some incense he needs while waiting.
Karl looks on in horror as his pirate bride hangs lifelessly from Phobe’s hand as a felt doll. He calmly explains he wants to play but his friend Erin is better when she’s full sized. Phobe plays with Erin as she talks to Karl about the games they should play. Phobe explains people were once grateful for her warnings and give her nice things like toys. Then they started getting mad about all the bad things happening, blaming her and yelling at her. Phobe reasoned they can’t be mean to her if they were dolls. She misses her Mama and Papa from the time before they got mad at her. Then, Erin starts to move and talk again. Phobe tells her to be good and quiet while her and Karl talk. Karl tries to reassure everything will be fine.   The discussion of games continues and it’s brought up Erin has a crew and Phobe could have the full set if she wanted. Phobe liked this idea. She wants to find more people to help fill out the crew. This distresses Erin and Phobe threats to unsow her lips if she is not quiet. Karl suggests that they go see Master Barnes since she was meant to be getting more toys but hasn’t come back. Phobe mentions that Master Barnes might not be feeling very well. The voice is telling Phobe that the fire is growing in the Halfling, but Karl can’t hear the voice. Phobe reveals that the voice tells her things that she must say in order for them to happen.   Phobe asks Rebecca at the front desk if she wants to play and Karl subtle signals ‘no’ to her. She politely refuses and the pair continue up to Master Barnes’ office. Phobe wants the world to be quiet and when it is she will get to go to a new world with all her toys. When they enter the office they see Master Barnes collapsed, barely conscious. On the floor, toy spilled out across the floor like she dropped everything when she fell. Her skin is shiny with sweat.   Karl asks if Phobe can stop it and she says all she can do is make Master Barnes a doll which might stop the fire growing. Karl moves over to Master Barnes while Phobe plays with some of the toys. Karl is trying to convince Phobe she doesn’t need to listen to the voice, but isn’t successful. He uses Dispel Magic on Master Barnes and is warned the voice didn’t like that by Phobe. Karl distracts Phobe with having her change Erin’s closes so he can quietly talk to Master Barnes without arousing suspicion.   Phobe and Karl leave the guild, him trying to get to more allies without endangering too many people. They pick up cake and head for the manor where Phobe is told about four lovely ladies that would love to play with Phobe. Karl is banned from using magic by Phobe and he sees Phobe’s shadow has many eyes and is looking at him.
Once the clothing is ready, Fargrim gets a message from Master Sparrow. Phobe is doing something weird, Karl is missing or location unknown. Fargrim does a sending to Karl to learn that they are headed for the manor, Erin is a doll and the aberration is causing a lot of problems.   They start running back to the manor, realising the seriousness of the issue. When Lily realises this is taking too long she turns Fargrim into a Giant Eagle to carry her and Xeldarix flies herself.
At the manor, Karl takes Phobe straight to the sunroom. There Uqaviel is very upset at seeing Phobe and communicates telepathically with Karl. Karl asks for his help and Karl is told to run. Three of the four Succubi are turned to dolls by Phobe. She gives Erin to Karl as he asks, but rips off an arm and a leg with the promise to put them back on later if Karl is good. Uqaviel suggests Karl get Caramella and run and Karl leaves to quickly get their housekeeper out of the house with Alfonso.   As Caramella and Karl get outside, organising Alfonso, Fargrim flies in as a Giant Eagle with Lily and Xeldarix. Karl has a firm grip on Erin as he updates Lily on what has happened. There is the sound of a child screaming in frustration as there is the faint sound of an explosion. A second later there is the sound of glass smashing as Uqaviel seems to have been thrown through the window of the sun room. He rolls and tumbles with the momentum, twisting his body so he rolls into his feet which skid across the ground leaving grooves in the ground as he comes to a halt. His charkams are in his hand as he looks towards the window as Phobe steps out of it.   Phobe demands Erin back as her other dolls have ‘exploded’. Caramella rides off with Alfonso and Xeladrix   "These were bad dolls! They blew up!" She looks over at the group as she screams. "Give me my doll back!" She demands, looking at Karl. His eyes are completely black. We're going to roll initiative as Caramella is riding Alfonso out the gate at this point. Xeldarix has her wings out and has summoned her sword as she is flying towards the fight. The group can see the shadow below Phobe is much larger than it should be and is full of eyes. Some looking at Uqaviel and some looking at the group.   The shadow lets out a strange sound that sends shivers down the spine of everyone around, but Uqaviel seems to shrug off whatever that was. Karl runs towards the shadow, Erin in hand as he whips out his wand to send 3 red darts at the shadow. Uqaviel tells the party that if they’re going to fight they have to go all out as he attacks the shadow. Phobe’s demands of Karl become more forceful as she demands Erin back and he’s almost dominated by her, but Lily rallies her ally and reminds him of what they’re doing and he’s able to overcome it.   Xeldarix flies and slashes at the shadow. Phobe reaches out to touch Xeldarix but she’s able to shrug off the magical effect. Lily summons Blackrazor and summons the hellhound spirit near the shadow creature. She maintains concentration on the spell making Fargrim an eagle for now but tells him to get closer so she may drop concentration on his ploymorph. The shadow lashes out at Xeldarix, catching her off guard and hurting her badly. Birdgrim gets all the way to the shadow and Lily drops the spell. The shadow then focuses all it’s attacks on Uqaviel. However a part of the shadow does touch Xeldarix, draining her slightly of life.   Karl makes one last move to convince Phobe to do the right thing magically with Mass Suggestion. He demands she “Step away from the shadow and abandon them. Come give me Erin’s limbs and cease your fighting.” He tells the others not to hurt Phobe as he runs towards her, holding his hand out towards her. The shadow strikes out at Uqaviel again. Uqaviel tries to warn the group that a creature like this might be the only reason Phobe is even still alive and to be careful as he attacks the Shadow himself. Phobe is screaming at Karl but it stops as the spell takes effect on her and she does as Karl suggested, asking about if they can still have cake. The shadow tries to follow but Uqaviel is keeping it where it is. As soon as Phobe is past Lily and Xeldarix the limbs fall from her hand as she grasps her heart and falls to her knees. A choked shout escapes her as she crumbles.   Xeldarix’s wrath, natural and divine, kicks in as she stabs at the ground to help Uqaviel keep the shadow from following Phobe. Lily invokes the Guardian of Nature and she also attacks the shadow. As Fargrim loses the last of his feathers, he takes a swing at the shadow with the Dwarven Axe, invoking Haelyn’s might to ensure he hits and following up with a second attack. The shadow retaliates by slashing at Fargrim. The shadow declares the girl is his and nothing without him. It's voice is like nails on a chalkboard with it's distortion. It strikes out at Uqaviel twice and Lily once. The touch drains Lily of some of her life.   Karl reassures Phobe she’s doing well and urges her to follow him as he continues to fire off charges at the shadow. He puts an arm around Phobe and moves her away from the shadow. The shadow reacts poorly to this, draining the life out of everyone around it and healing itself. This badly hurts everyone, causing Fargrim to collapse. Uqaviel radiates with divine energy, calling out with his voice of authority that the shadow should leave the group be as he attacks the creature.   Phobe complains of the pain and Xeldarix moves over to Fargrim. She screams at him to get up as she heals him a little. Lily heals herself. Fargrim gets up, dazed and shocked. He will attempt to heal himself for all he can. He fears attempting to move away might get himself sent back down to the ground. Uqaviel does his best to keep the Shadow’s attention on himself as Erin grows limper in Karl’s hand. The Shadow slashes at Uqaviel before sending a dark tendril at Fargrim, draining him of more life and exhausting him.   Karl apologises to Uqaviel as he casts Wall of Force to encircle Uqaviel and the Shadow, trapping them together. He yells at his friends to run. The creature attacks with panic as it is now trapped with an angel and the angel explores into fire, obscuring what happened inside the bubble. Slowly the fire dies down and Uqaviel is a crumbled form on the ground and the shadow is not visible. Xeldarix is anxiously and aggressively attacking the barrier. Lily tries her best to calm Xeldarix as she nor Fargrim can see any sign of the creature.   Karl is immediately pulling the doll limbs out and pressing them to Erin as he casts Mending. He checks on Phobe and she complains it hurts. Uqaviel is slow to sit up. His weapons fade from where they landed on the grass which is now blackened and burnt. Xeldarix jumps at her own shadow and starts to aggressively and frantically attack it. Fargrim casts Detect Evil and Good to find that trace amounts of celestial and abberation coming from Phobe but it's fading. Erin comments and not feeling right. Karl notices Erin’s leg moved a little after it was reattached but not as much as her other leg and left arm had been moving. Her right arm has not moved at all since it was reattached. Karl dispels the magic and with a very sudden movement and the sound of ripping Erin is herself again. It knocks Karl back with the force and she falls to the ground. She lays there limply, unmoving and uncovered since Phobe had changed out her clothes. Her eyes are closed. Karl immediately pulls off his cloak and wraps Erin up. He calls to his friends for help as Phobe is fading and Erin isn’t moving.   Uqaviel approaches and asks the group if they want the girl to have a second chance like they had mentioned earlier. Meanwhile Xeldarix is continuing to stab at the shadows. Her own shadow that is moving violently with her own actions is drawing her attention. Lily says she deserves a second chance while trying to calm Xeldarix. Fargrim casts Greater Restoration on Erin which has her stirring. She looks tired and unwell. Karl takes a moment to comfort Erin before going over to comfort Phobe.   Uqaviel offers to save her if he could have a diamond of significant quality. Lily shows him her diamonds, but he would need one of higher quality. Fargrim goes over to Phobe once he is satisfied with Erin’s condition as Erin has fallen asleep. He gives her a merciful death as he has run out of the powerful magic that could have helped her. Karl can’t stop his tears from falling, but Fargrim is stone faced. Lily hugs Xeldarix and Xeldarix hugs her back. Karl thanks Fargrim before going to go and sit by Erin. He holds her hand, but it is very cold to the touch. Uqaviel remarks on the mercy and makes his offer again to try to revive the child. However he doesn’t get an answer right away.   Karl wakes Erin to check on her limbs, and finds the right arm has no feeling and the left leg doesn’t have as much feeling as it should. She can’t move the arm and the leg is hard to move. Lily goes to check on the Succubi, but finds that they are nowhere to be seen. Karl remembers the guild at this stage and the fact the Master’s had been in danger. Karl explains what he hadn’t been able to explain before the fight had started about what happened at the guild before he takes Erin inside to rest.   Uqaviel is confused when Lily starts to talk about getting a shovel for the body, but is distracted by Xeldarix who has gone over to Phobe to try and heal her. He restrains her. Karl comes back outside to get some healing for Erin while Xeldarix struggles to get away from Uqaviel. The group discusses if Phobe should be brought back or not. Karl is conflicted. She’s at peace now with no one to hurt her now and there is nothing here for her. Lily suggests a different kind of life for Phobe and accepts bringing her back might not be for the best. Xeldarix calms and wants to help, first going to heal Erin some and then Karl while Lily gets a shovel. Fargrim goes inside and cleans his equipment.   Xeldarix goes back outside to help Lily with digging the hole. She tries to explain how Phobe will now be a tree but this just confuses Xeldarix. Karl comes back downstairs as they finish digging. Uqaviel steps down into the grave and places something on Phobe's forehead before stepping back out and leaving to go find Fargrim. Uqaviel steps down into the grave and places something on Phobe's forehead before stepping back out and leaving to go find Fargrim. Lily focuses on a tree token that she places on Phobe and a mighty oak tree grows in over her.   With the body now buried, Xeldarix now gives Karl his new desert clothes with their additional features to do with the sea. Karl tells Lily about the Retriever medallion and how Fargrim is the target. Due to not wanting to risk any hostile visitors from other planes, they decide they will leave in the morning instead of today. Karl also tells Lily about the scroll and how he got a second one so they can both cast the Find Greater Familiar spell. Karl and Lily go see Fargrim, but is understandably moody about the whole situation and excuses himself to bed. Lily summons a little white bat to keep an eye on Fargrim. Karl has a nap and Lily continues to read her book.
After an hour's rest at 11:30 Karl comes downstairs and after looking around a little he finds Lily out in the garden reading. Xeldarix is sitting with Uqaviel on the other side of the tree. He collects from Lily his statue that he had commissioned and she picked up. Karl goes to check on Fargrim, but he doesn’t answer his door, and writes Erin a note in case she wakes up while he’s gone. Karl sends Carmella a message to invite her to return if she wants to.
Karl heads off to the mage guild, using the dust of illusion he changes himself to look like a handsome black haired elf with purple eyes and very pale skin. And his staff looks like a finely polished ebony walking staff. Karl enters the mage guild, dropping the disguise, and speaks with Master Burke. He explains Master Barnes, Master Eelwind and Master Sparrow are currently resting after all possible resources were spent to fix the problem. They discuss the incident a little before Karl goes to find June in the library with his spellbook. June listens while Karl retells the tale of what had happened today while June is finishing off copying over the Darkvision spell. After he has his book back June goes to see Master Sparrow and Karl uses more dust to disguise himself the same way, goes to buy 200 gp worth of familiar summoning supplies, and heads back to the manor.
While Karl was gone Lily was reading and Fargrim was napping.
At 1pm, as Karl disguised as a handsome black haired elf with purple eyes and very pale skin. As he comes into the garden where Lily is still reading, they both hear a yell from an unknown voice. Next to Caramella and Alfonso is a new figure. He wears simple work clothes, gloves, and a good deal of dirt. He has dark skin and hazel eyes. His straight red and gray hair is twisted into many short, tight braids. He is incredibly muscular, but is always sniffling and sneezing. He is 35 years old (adult), 5 ft, 4 in (163 cm) tall, and weighs 158 lbs (72 kg).   This is their groundsman, Elliot McGregor who is very unhappy with the damage to the house and the changes to the garden. The group introduces themselves and Caramella organises lunch. Karl checks on Erin, Lily continues reading and Fargrim continues to sleep.   At 1:30pm Fargrim is woken up for lunch and wants to speak to Uqaviel. Karl tells him it’s time for lunch and that Uqaviel is out in the garden. Outside the group talks about what happened. Karl explains the retriever was after Fargrim and he shouldn’t be alone from now on.   Lily notices Phobe is with Uqaviel and Xeldarix since she is wearing the mask. She offers the mask to Fargrim. Fargrim puts it on to see Phobe and takes it off since he is not ready to deal with this. Karl also looks but does not talk with Phobe. The group discusses leaving tomorrow. Karl wants to go back to the guild to get Erin’s things and Fargrim offers to go with. Lily stays to read and talk with Phobe.
Fargrim and Karl arrive at the guild and speak with Master Burke. They collect Erin’s clothes and belonging before going down to see the injured. They are shown what the Master’s had expelled from their bodies. The material they coughed up are in jars being watched by Reed. Fargrim casts Detect Evil and Good to find they are aberrations. Karl and Fargrim banish the blobs. Then head back to the manor.
At 2:15 when they arrive back at the manor Karl goes up to see Erin and Fargrim goes to help McGregor with the sun. Not long afterwards Lily finishes reading her book. She goes to see Karl who is talking to Erin upstairs. Lily wants to see when Karl is going to use the familiar scroll. Karl still needs to copy the scroll into his spell book so it would be in the morning when he did it. Afterwards Lily leaves heading for Xeldarix/Avani’s temple.
At 4pm Karl escorts Erin back to her inn after Caramella has fussed around her and helped her the best she can.
At 4:30pm Lily returns to the manor. Fargrim requests that Lily walk with him around town while he picks up the last of what he needs before they leave in the morning.
At 5pm everyone returns back to the manor. Karl flies in while Lily and Fargrim walk. In the hour lead up to dinner, people are helping and Karl is scribing.   At 6pm McGregor stops working with his list and approximate costing to fully fix the room. It's going to be 800 gold to fix the room. He approaches the party with this as dinner is served by Caramella and Fargrim. Caramella tells him off for bringing this up at dinner. Karl gives McGregor 80 platinum while giving Lily and Fargrim 120 platinum each as well.   Xeldarix practises sneaking food from Karl’s plate but is caught. They teach her about mortals feeling hungry. This leads to Xeladrix explaining she always feels mad, like it is hiding under her skin.   After dinner Karl continues scribing, Lily talks with Uqaviel and Xeldarix and Fargrim prepares his bags.
At about 7:30pm Fargrim seeks out Uqaviel. They talk about a dream that Fargrim had and about his fears for his friends. Uqaviel expresses his confusion over the decision being flipped about helping Phobe. He reveals he took steps to ensure that impulsive mortal decisions did not have to have long lasting effects if it was regretted that a tree with be between the group and Phobe’s body. Fargrim casts Sending to High Paladin Salma and learns they have a diamond of the right quality.   Fargrim asks Uqaviel to walk with him since he has learned the retriever was after him. Uqaviel agrees but will be invisible during this time. When they arrive Salma asks about the need for the diamond and Fargrim tells her of Phobe’s story. She listens and agrees to sell Fargrim the diamond since the temple cannot give it away due to being such a great expense. Salma promises to check in on the child tomorrow.   Upon their return, Fargrim and Uqaviel start the ritual to bring Phobe back. Uqaviel summons his Chakrams that glow with fire as the sun starts to set. They float up out of his hands. They slowly circle Uqaviel, the tree and Fargrim.   "Haelyn, I beseech the." Uqaviel says. "A child died long ago and was forced to live as a creature torments and uses her, warping her sense of reality." He looks up. "A second chance is requested, so she might live as intended and out of the reach of the void." Uqaviel looks at Fargrim. "The diamond and your offering?"   Fargrim produces the diamond and hands it to Uqaviel. He then goes on both knees and prays. "Justice must be done. Many years ago a wrong was committed to this girl, and the persons present did not have the ability, or the will, to set it right. Instead, justice was delayed until today, where the foul creature who committed this trespass was utterly defeated. In the course of these duties, a girl's life was unjustly ended. She has done nothing wrong, committed no crime, transgressed no law, but had her life cut short - never to feel the grass in her hands or the sun in her face. We ask to give her only what other children have by birthright - a chance to make her own mistakes and to be judged on her character alone. We only seek to give her back what was taken from her unjustly. Justice must be done."   Uqaviel touches the diamond to the tree. Fargrim notices there is a ruby embedded there. "Please Haelyn. Hear us." He closes his eyes as the Chakram spins faster and faster. Around you both as the gem starts to glow in the tree. The diamonds disintegrate in Uqaviel's hand and the tree starts to shift. The bow twisting open as the chakram becomes painfully bright for a moment, forcing Fargrim to close his eyes for a moment. Then when the light Clears Uqaviel sways slightly before he seems forced down to one knee by his own fatigue. The chakrams have fallen to the ground and the hollow in the tree remains open.   Fargrim goes over to check on Uqaviel but is waved off with his interest being more focused on if their prayers were heard. At this point Fargrim gets a message from Karl. The bright light had drawn the attention of both Karl and Lily inside. Fargrim tries to reassure Karl everything is fine. Meanwhile, inside the hollow of the tree a very alive Phobe sleeps. Karl seems unconvinced and messages Fargrim again and Fargrim admits he might need a hand. Uqaviel requests to be allowed a moment outside while Fargrim takes Phobe inside.   Lily and Karl both meet Fargrim as he comes inside. Karl is sent out to check on Uqaviel while Lily helps Fargrim give Phobe a medical check up. Caramella goes upstairs to prepare Lila’s bed for Phobe. Phobe is tucked in for a night of rest. Lily also goes out to check on Uqaviel who insists he just needs some rest.   Everyone goes back to either reading, scribing or resting for the remainder of the night.   29th of Haelynir 1524   The morning of the 29th is warm with a few clouds in the sky but overall it looks like a nice day. Most are up between 6 and 6:30am. Phobe sleeps soundly while everyone has breakfast. Karl casts Contingency on himself with false life if he should fall below half health it would activate at 5th level.   Karl takes Xeldarix outside to help him summon Aeyrn in her new form. This process takes an hour while Lily watches. Meanwhile Fargrim checks on Uqaviel before quickly running to the store for some stationary, seeming to forget he shouldn’t be going alone.   As the incense starts to fade and the coals are dying down, Karl places a sheet of paper inscribed with runes circling a drawing of a dragon onto the embers. The flames flare up to consume the paper, and as the flames die down and the embers fade out a small red dragon is standing in the middle of the spent coals. Karl holds his hand out, and the dragon shakes the ashes off of herself and slowly stalks over to him as the ritual is finally complete. Karl re-introduces Xeldarix to Aeryn. She is disappointed the familiar is no longer a bird, but does seem to like her regardless.   Lily leaves for the temple of Xeldarix/Avani’s temple, Fargrim goes to buy rations and Karl is left to wake Phobe and explain what is happening. Phobe is very tired, but accepting of what is happening.   At 9:30am Lily returns and the group readies themselves to leave. Lily casts Wind walk but quickly learns this limits communication. Karl ritually casts telepathic bond and has Xeldarix help with telepathic communication so he is not left out of the loop for communication. At 10am the group flies for Mount Archestual.   The group works slowly, stopping to refresh telepathic bond once every hour or so when required as follows:
  • 11:10am they leave an obelisk that was between Archestual and the forest to the South
  • 12:35am they leave an obelisk between the lake and Unbrau in Rheulgard. At the next marker the group changes into their desert clothes, however Fargrim puts his armour over the top.
  • 1:55pm leave the first desert marker, but spot a coliseum to the West near the river bank.
  • 3:05pm leave the third desert marker in The Sphinx region.
At 3:25 the group arrives at one last obelisk not far from a large pyramid. It doesn’t take them long to fly closer, but Aeyrn does scout it out first before the group joins her to look around.
The city is in ruins with only the temple and the pyramid having any real form of shelter outside of walls. The pyramid is about 750 feet square at the base, rising to a height of at least 700 feet. The highly polished rock that forms its exterior is untouched by desert sands, in contrast to the rock of the 20 ft high wall that surrounds it.   The pyramid sides face the compass points. The only break in the guarding wall is the temple to the south. Entrance is obviously via a platform that opens in the south face, 50 feet above the ground. Stairs climb the pyramid’s south face from a walkway connecting the rear of the temple to the pyramid.   Like the stone of the surrounding wall, the stone of the temple is worn by time, though still solid and sturdy. There are no windows in the temple wall, and only one entrance, gained via two staircases flanked a circular basin, climbing 30 feet to the temple porch. The temple’s roof is capped by one large and two small domes.   A broken lime-cement basin, 100 feet in diameter, with no apparent openings in the bottom lies within the embrace of the stairs to the temple entryway. The basin obviously once contained water, which emptied into a deep channel in the desert ground. This channel leads away from the temple south, passing the building ruins there before turning east and then north, out into the great desert.   Fargrim spots some tents to the West of the pyramid and points it out to the group. They go down to have a look and Lily can tell Lions and Jackals made the marks seen going in and out the tents. After their brief examination they head off to look at the temple in front of the pyramid.   The temple is made of huge blocks of granite and cement, and is decorated by colourful paint, gold plating, and inlays of various stones, including semi-precious stones in some areas. Geometric patterns are common, as are various depictions of a high regarded person and animals from the region.   Out the front a basin from a single marble section dozens of feet in diameter stands in the centre between curving staircases. There’s no visible hole in the bottom of the basin but clearly water once ran from here down a channel carved by flow in the desert floor.   Although worn by time, the temple’s stone walls are still sturdy and impressive. There are no windows and only one visible entrance behind a platform reached by twin curving staircases. The temple’s roof is capped by one large and two small domes. The stairs leading to the temple’s porch are stone, pocked and pitted by the desert sands. Wide bannisters of stone flank the steps, their graceful arcs leading to a semi-circular protrusion from the porch. Six pillars hold up the porch roof. The arched doors of bronze stand closed in the temple wall.   The group takes a short 15 minute break outside to have some food. The group hesitates before going inside, remembering their last trials that they went through on this quest. They try knocking to be polite however there is no answer.
They go in through the welcoming hall and then through the next doors into a room with an altar and a defaced statue. There is some Masesian writing on the wall.   Through his spirit lies far from us in heaven westward, into his likeness does this spirit come that he may commune with men.   This confuses the group a little. Fargrim casts Detect Evil and Good to discover the place is consecrated. The group goes around clockwise in the building. Lily casts Detect Magic with her wand. There is a jade statue in the room, which is magical, with rubies for eyes. Fargrim looks at it and sees the eyes were removed at one point and have either been returned or replaced.   The group continues to go round and Karl knocks on the door and a Lamia opens the door and attacks. There are many of them and some Jackalweres as well that all attack. Lily hears them refer to the group as being a good meal and good slaves. The first Lamia slinks through the door with a cat-like grace. It grapples Karl, dragging him away from the door. Lily reacts and gets a good hit on the creature. A second Lamia slinks out of the room and attacks Lily, almost caressing her shoulder as a curse is placed on her.   Meanwhile 7 Jackalweres come running out the room. Many heading further down the hallway and disappearing from sight. Two stay to engage Lily and Karl. An attempt is made to put them to sleep with their gaze but it is unsuccessful. Karl, not liking to be in the clutches of this lion lady which would greatly upset Erin, Misty Steps out to the other side of the room and sends a bolt of fire back at the creature.   Xeldarix summons her sword to join the fight. Fargrim slices into one of the lamias, hitting it twice, trying to force the beast back. Lily warns the creatures to make the right choice as she casts Guardian of Nature on herself and attacking the same Lamia as Fargrim, killing the creature and sword devours the soul of the creature. The Jackalweres looks over at Fargrim and Xeldarix. Fargrim is able to shrug off the effect but Xeldarix collapses to the ground, her sword clattering loudly as it hits the ground before she does. One of the Jackalwere runs over to Karl, another picks up Xeldarix and runs away from the group and another circles around Fargrim.   Karl reacts by tossing a fireball into the centre of the room, sculpting the spell around Fargrim, Lily, Xeldarix and Uqaviel. This kills four of the Jackalweres. Uqaviel offers some sarcastic commentary about Karl thinking he was safe just because of distance as he scoops up Xeldarix who had been dropped by a now dead Jackalwere. He takes her over to the side out of the way. Fargrim kills the Jackalwere in front of him before moving up. Another Jackalwere tries to attack Fargrim but misses.   Lily gives Uqaviel an appreciative nod when he removes the sleepy Xeldarix before pleading with the lamia to just leave before attacking her. The creature attacks Lily for her efforts but Lily reacts with a Hellish rebuke. Karl throws another fireball, sculpting it around his friends again, killing another Jackalwere. Uqaviel remarks that some have gone around the temple to try and come around the back of the group. Lily throws her own fireball into the room with three of the Lamia. One of the Lamia grab Fargrim and drag him into that room. Two Jackalweres look at Karl and while he shrugs off one the other has him falling asleep which has Uqaviel rolling his eyes from the sidelines.   Fargrim summons his Spiritual Weapon to hurt the Lamia that has him. Lily informs Fargrim of the situation with Karl, attacking the Lamia closest to her, killing it and drawing the soul from the creature before rushing over to Karl. The Jackalweres attack Lily, causing her to lose concentration on her Guardian of Nature spell. Fargrim continues to hold off the two Lamia in the room with him using his axe and Spiritual Weapon. Lily wakes up Karl and the Lamia that had come round the back attacks Lily with a dagger. Lily reacts with a Hellish Rebuke. The Jackalweres focus their attacks on Lily. Karl casts another Fireball to kill the last three Jackalweres. Karl points his staff at the Lamia and draws his finger across his throat with his free hand. Fargrim continues to hold his own.   Lily attacks the Lamia Karl threatened. This Lamia gets Lily with it’s dagger in return but that only gets it another Hellish Rebuke. Fargrim is cursed by the Lamia attacking him and hit with it’s claw attack. Karl sends a bolt of fire at one. Fargrim finally kills one of the Lamia with him, leaving only one behind. Lily kills and her sword devours another soul before she runs back to help Fargrim. Karl flings a bolt of fire at the last creature. Fargrim’s axe and Spiritual Weapon hit the creature. Lily almost brings it down and it gets one last claw attack on Lily before Karl kills it with his bolt of fire.   Lily goes over to wake Xeldarix, who is okay. Fargrim however, learns that his hot weather gear was not made to be worn under his armour as he has dry heaves, tugging at the straps to try and get it off. Lily and Karl quickly aid him to get it off. Lily explains the creatures were going to enslave or eat them and Karl realises they were speaking Khinasi. While Fargrim takes a moment to sit, Lily and Karl look over the room the Lamia were in. Looking around and at the creatures they find each of the Lamia have old looking daggers that haven't been well cared for. The Jackalweres have old chipped scimitars. Most of the boxes in this room are damaged. They were once provisions but most of them are now gone. Their paws match the tracks that Lily saw in the tents outside. The Jackalwere had turns back into normal jackals upon dying.   Lily volunteers to go around the rest of the building while Karl waits with Fargrim. On her search out the back entrance Lily sees four men sneaking up to the pyramid across the bridge that connects the two structures. Lily goes back to tell Karl and Fargrim about it. Karl casts Invisibility on Aeryn so she can go and scout this out. Karl reports back that they are looking for a timb and a place to hide. Lily nods and goes back to searching their current building. The building seems very empty. However, the group is suspicious of the large wasted space in the centre. They carefully search the area to find a door behind the first statue they found. Inside is a book.
(Osiris is replaced with Masela though)   Karl remarks this is rather old since it references Masela instead of Neira who replaced her. Lily reminds Xeldarix to stay near Karl so she can’t be possessed as they move towards the pyramid. The group heads out to the bridge area. A ten foot wide stone causeway raised 20 feet off the ground at this point rises to the entrance of the pyramid a total of fifty feet from the desert floor.   The bridge leads to the pyramid from the walkway at the rear of the temple to the pyramid. They are highly polished as the pyramid walls, reflecting the light from a mirror-smooth finish untouched by the ravages of desert sandstorms. The entrance is 50 ft above the courtyard. At the top of the stairs is a platform that is 50 ft across at the front and narrowing to 30 ft deep. The entrance to the pyramid is carved with intricate carvings of animals that frame the opening.   Karl sends Aeryn ahead to scout for the men, but they seem to have gone missing.
The group searches the three front rooms and speak with a ghost named Majid Hammoud who was killed by the Lamia when he was researching here. He wished to have his work published and be credited. Once he has told the group what he learned, his spirit passes on.   Apparently things placed on the bowl in the East room disappear in flames but were unlikely to be burnt.   Karl reads what is written on the walls. It seems to be done later than the making of the room. Of the East Room.   Though there had been much talk about amon-re, it was generally recognised by the people and priests alike that he was the greatest of the gods in heaven westward, for he alone manifested his power in his own temple. Sacrifices of food and gold were brought daily to lay on the altar before the statues in the small worship temples east and west in the pyramid. It is our priesthood rite that whatsoever Masela accepts she will take from the altar and that she wishes the priests to have, she leaves on the altar. This profited the priests greatly, except that all offerings left in the east temple would vanish forever. Several priests, upset to see their assets disappearing, searched the east temple and they too disappeared. The temple became a most hallowed place so that all who wished to give offerings came to that temple. The priesthood then became unprofitable and our doctrine changed from trade to trick. Offerings were often made, for a passage was always provided between the tomb of the king and his likeness, whereby his spirit may pass into his ordained statue and live within the stone. Such passage as always provided for the kings that they might live among us once more.   In the West room there is more writing on the walls:   It was said that throughout the land from that time forth those who entered the tomb either came forth saying that its riches were already plundered or else they never returned at all. That day the river dried up and the rains disappeared. The arid sun burned into the land and all withered under its gaze. The people, too, dried up and blew away like the grass that withered beneath their feet. All now that remains is I who tend this temple, in the holes that some soul might turn that terrible wrath of amun-re. I also sell trinkets to the pilgrims who come. The building of the pyramid was a colossal feat, especially in the bad years. The money had lost value so many times that people began to wonder if the gold would have any worth at all in the future. The trade business died away after the first four years and now I am stuck with 12 pyramid figures. Oh for the days when a priest could make an honest gold.   Behind the statue in the West room Lily finds another switch and it reveals a passageway. There are two rooms with wells in them. Between them is a room identical to the West offer room. While Lily and Karl look into this the statue shuts and Fargrim is separated from the group. This is quickly fixed.   The group can’t find any more secret passages. The East well room is identical to the West one except it has a shaft where water comes out of the side. The group talks about theories to do with the water and if there is even a curse if there is water here. It’s only hidden.   At 5:15pm the group takes a short rest. Karl hears people outside the door. They’re complaining the pyramid has already been raided. Karl uses his Clairvoyance in the West offering room to see the four people that Aeryn saw entering the pyramid activate the switch so they can enter that room. They have a lantern but once they are in that room they extinguish it. They are heading for the exit.   The group discusses options. However, when it is mentioned that Karl could send Aeryn into the fire bowl, she bites Karl’s ear. She flies over to Xeldarix to hiss and pout at the idea of being used in such a way. Lily summons Goodberries for the group to eat.   Afterwards Lily and Karl do a ritual each. Lily does Detect Magic and Karl does Telepathic bond. The temple itself has abjuration magic everywhere. The water has evocation magic. Lily explores the wall as a dolphin and finds that they are connected through a tunnel below the water level, but then notices at the bottom of the West well that the water is being drawn down a hole Lily can’t see through that has conjuration magic.   Curious, Lily decides to go up the water spout area to see if she can find a conjuration area it could be coming from. The wet and slimy walls of this 10 ft diameter sluiceway slant up farther than light will reach. Water pours down from above, filling the duct more than an 18 inch depth. The air is humid and cool. 550 ft upslope to the North. Unless magical or extraordinary means are used, ascent against the water is impossible, for the slope rises 1 ft every 5 ft. At the top of the sloping sluiceway, there is a cascade of water falling from above. On the other side of the water is a platform with a chute above it. Lily continues to follow the water up.
She finds herself in a corridor where the water is a stream heading for the duct she came out of. She continues until she finds a jungle area. This huge 30 ft wide, 50 ft long room is brightly lit, and within it grows a lush jungle of plants and trees reaching up to the thirty foot high domed ceiling. The light (pure sunlight - something a few of the monsters on this level avoid and are harmed by) comes from the ceiling itself which is painted like a bright summer sky with a few high clouds. The water channel here is more natural, looking more like a creek than an aqueduct. Two huge bronze bowls stand on either side of the creek, filled with fruit of all kinds and types, fresh and inviting. Four rounded alcoves are on the West and East walls, two each largely hidden by the lush growth.   There she speaks with a half snake, half man by the name of Sessilan. He and his people, Sunnis’ children, cannot leave this place. The puppet master who controls the pharaoh is keeping them here. A sacrifice is demanded, but the timeline for them is hard to judge when time is hard to judge here. She rests here with him watching her after the group discusses what to do telepathically.   Xeldarix doesn’t want to wait and tries to teleport to Lily, but causes a nosebleed when she is unable to do so. Karl and Fargrim decide to fly up to Lily, but can only take 3 people. The area is too small for Xeldarix or Uqaviel to use their wings. He suggests he and Xeldarix wait here. It takes some convincing and Aeryn staying with her to convince her to wait until sunset tomorrow for the group.   With that Karl casts Fly so he and Fargrim can make the journey. There they meet up with Lily and talk with Sessilan. He speaks Draconic so only Karl and Lily (with the mask) can speak with him. There are 100 of Sunnis children left but 1000 originally went into the area. The East is safe and is their area, but the West is not safe. However there is apparently a library where they might learn more about the High Priest who is the puppet master. The group has some of the fruit and finds their strength and dexitery improves after eating it. They are warned to be quiet in the area to the North with the palm trees.   Fargrim quickly learns why when he was accidentally too loud. The pineapples in the tree fell down and exploded, actually hurting him far more than he expected. They make it to the other side and are quickly confronted with more Lamia. These ones look more hungry and desperate. The narrow hallways help the group prevent the Lamia from attacking too easily and are able to take them out without suffering too much harm, except for Fargrim.   The group goes back to the jungle area. Fargrim and Lily spar while Karl sets up some alarms. They get ready to rest for what they think is the night.
