Session 12: The Wrath of Chunky Report

General Summary

After sailing upriver for two hours, our adventurers– still hurt from their last conflict with the Hanzaki that patrolled the river in search of food– finally returned to Silverhold with their assigned escort in tow to deal with the Elemental Threat that lurked deep within the Mines. And they were greeted warmly by a much-relived Warden Seiji Tadashi.   Over a welcomed dinner of Miso Soup and Sashimi, the Party and Warden discussed what had happened in the six days since their last meeting. The Party was informed of how all operations had to once more halt on account of the growing winter’s chill that lingered within the Mines, in the final days of (what we would consider) June no less. The Party was invited to use Silverhold’s facilities as they needed before dealing with the growing concern down below– as well as given furs to help combat the cold. In terms of business, they were allotted the standard 10 Gold that would be provided as an Adventuring Contract, as well as a temporary exclusion on the Monster Hunting Contract on the Hanzaki after this job was finished. Before the party retired, they were reminded that he still needed a name for their party to write on their official papers before they could turn such in to curry quick favor with both the Magistrate and the Silverguard as a whole.   In the morning the Party, and the Guardian Priests, marched into the depths to finally face off against the menace they had come to name Chunky. And the battle was hard-fought as the Priests performed their Ritual. As the first of the Soul Lanterns was being activated, Bimbledorf sprung into action as he formed a slab of ice he intended to surf upon– before leaping into the water and missing his improvised surfboard. Here he was presented a vision of robed cultists with Serpentine features, adorned with glimmering gold, as they set a large talon with a series of bones that alarmingly looked like they once belonged to a Dragon from old historical tomes.   The rest of the party, along with Arata, did their best to defend their charges from water formed into the shape of tentacles that tried to grab and pull their number into the waters below. All the while the temperature sunk lower and lower, to depths that threatened to become lethal. When the first Soul Lantern was lit, that of the Azure Dragon, the remaining three started to scramble to their places. Bimbledorf scrambled back onto his surfboard, only for it to collapse as it crashed into Chunky as the waters ripped him ever closer– providing him the second of the Visions: A conflagration of a collective of Fire Elementals, seemingly being confined to a singular place and empowered by some collection of Arcane Runes– their power building into overwhelming pressure. Between the visions, the threat of his soul being drained back into the very lifeblood of the waters and taxing cold– consciousness began to fade, his last act of the fight being his ability to form a bowl to keep him afloat.   And a good thing too, as when a path to confront Chunky head-on was presented, Diaono heroically charged to match the massive Water Elemental in combat. The exchange was quick, but the empowered force of the Elemental hammered at the Berserker– he lost his footing and plunged into the water. This granted the third and final vision granted to the party over the course of the fight, that of Priests using the Leylines to communicate. The connection was short, a mere six seconds, but enough to learn of a conspiracy of some sort that was behind schedule– one that was supposed to be kickstarted during the Summer Festivals. But as the chill dug to the core of the man, he was able to climb within the bowl that kept the unconscious Bimbledorf from drowning. Their healer, Xiyan, was able to fish them from the waters below.   Soon the Soul Lanterns of the Vermillion Bird and Black Tortoise were activated and with some quick thinking from their Pyromancer they were able to neutralize the threat for the final Lantern to be activated– imprisoning the Water Elemental known as Chunky into a Great Jinmenju Tree. A tree the Guardian Priests seem certain can be used as a sort of Oracle as it taps directly into the Leywaters of the World of Sekai.
