Session 246 - Den of Thieves
General Summary
8th of Nolus (First month of Summer) 725TR
The story so far
Avon, aided by the party, has agreed to clear the "good name" of the head of Coranan's Thieves Guild, Koral the Bloody. The vicious Guildmaster has been unjustly blamed for stealing a cookbook belonging to a baker, the famous chef to the city's rich and powerful.
The real criminal is a wizard hiding in the rival Kuseme Thieves Guild. The party is currently assaulting the underground guildhall; in the process, the heroes appear to be eliminating Koral the Bloody's rivals.
This is the continuation of Session 245 - Honor Among Thieves.
Location - Kuseme Township in the Thardic Republic.
Part 1 - Assassins and Rust Monsters
The heroes make their through waterlogged passages, deeper into the underground lair of the Kuseme's Thieves Guild. The next cavern houses two Ivashu guards, Welfynn, more commonly known as the Rust Monsters. Jolanta temporarily traps them in a Dome of Force. However, an Assassin lies in wait and wounds Blaine with a well-placed shot. The Assassin backs off into a side passage, closely followed by Avon, who is nearly ambushed by another Killer, hidden in wait.
As the battle progresses, Jolanta is hit but barely maintains concertation on her Wall of Force, keeping the rust monsters contained. The two killers are cunning fighters but are eventually dispatched. Suddenly a blast of fire hits the party; the Wizard Tommas is hiding down a side passage. He hits Blaine with a series of expertly placed magical energy attacks, nearly killing him. Jolanta uses her powerful magical Staff of Cryptan Seaweave and raises the water level, flooding the passage, but the cunning wizard evades her.
Part 2 - Another Ambush
Avon avoids several traps and leads the party to what appears to be a living room or barracks. More thieves lie in wait, and this time Avon and Blaine are nearly overwhelmed by a thief who turns out to be an excellent swordsman. Blaine is having a horrible day. Jolanta turns Avon Invisible, and he scores a decisive series of hits, killing all opposition except one man who escapes down a side passage.
Avon and Moneypenny follow and run into another expertly prepared ambush. As the rest of the party arrives, Avon kills the remaining scoundrels, capturing one alive, although Moneypenny is badly injured.
Part 3 - Rare Books
The thief is questioned by Avon, a master interrogator, and he quickly cracks. The party learns that only the leader of the guild, Caldan One-Eye, and two more criminals remain, apart from the Wizard Tommas. The thief says this wizard was working with the Thieves Guild to acquire books from a mysterious library. This library contained the cookbook Galopea's Recipes of the Gods and several others that have since been acquired.
The exhausted heroes rest for a bit. Avon used some magic he had acquired to summon a Water Elemental as additional support. They proceed to what is expected to be the final confrontation with the Wizard Tommas and Caldan One-Eye.
