Session 1 Report: Winterfest - Games and Thugs
General Summary
Winterfest in the remote coastal town of Costra is buzzing with excitement. The festival features games and competitions as well as "boat raising" for the nearly completed Mastiff - the largest Corvathian vessel to built in a generation. The scene opened with Huric excitedly showing Otanyn the finer points of the ships construction while Aetrus and Zeveth found themselves squaring off in the battle of entertainers. An epic battle of wits ensued. Aetrus started off with expert acrobatics throwing her cloak in the air to reveal her young dire puli - Beeper who lept into the air catching the cloak. Pushed by the wild applause of the crowd she pulled out her jade flute and began to dance and play, ultimately tripping over Beeper ending her performance much more shakily than she had begun. Zeveth, sensing an opportunity, recited an impromptu poem praising his adversary before poking fun at her failed ending. The crowd roared its approval. Nearly even the second round commenced. Another lyrical dance routine netted Aetrus many fans. However, a second slam poem by Zeveth looked to have turned the tide before it petered into lackluster ending. The crowd raised their ribbons in support of their favorite entertainer but the results were too close to call. Each entertainer was given 20 more seconds to impress the crowd. Aatrus emerged victorious with a mock tumbling and dog attack on Zeveth whose retaliatory attempt at poetic vicious mockerly left...much to be desired. Altrus thus found herself 50 gold richer. In another corner of the festival the traditional child's sack race was taking place. Jax, a young child of 12 was baited by his Oathbearer Maelstra to challenge Marlot the reigning champion and his town's bully. Though small, Jax had tricks up his sleeve. After jumping off to a quick start, cutting of his opponent, Jax found himself neck and neck with Merlot. Surreptitiously casting a minor illusion spell as the sackers approached the first obstacle, Jax made the wooden platform the competitors had to jump onto appear slightly longer than it was. This caused Merlot to epically fail his leap and tumble off the platform on the way to disqualification, but not before Jax also failed his jump sending him similarly sprawling. Fortunately for Jax, Merlot struck the ground first thus officially losing the race. This was good news for Maelstra who had bet on her young charge at 7 to 1 odds. Walking through the crowd Thelia was accompanying her Oathbearer, the old and frail Meritha. Meritha sensed something was amiss when she saw a number of hooded figures dispersed throughout the crowds. She alerted Thelia just in time for the group of thugs to reveal themselves and begin to lay into the crowd with batons. The thugs had been sent as punishment to the community for the construction of the Mastiff, contrary to the wishes of the Northern Empires naval families. Seeing their fellow Corvathians being beaten, each of the nascent heroes jumped into action attacking the thugs. As the ruffians rushed the Mastiff with cries of "meet the Havoc" they were quickly overwhelmed by the heroes. However, at the mention of the Havoc, Bosun raised a call of alarm to the heroes' Oathbearers, who upon closer observation clearly knew one another. Springing into action both the heroes and the Oathbearers converged on the Mastiff as the Havoc, a swift war sloop, enters the bay heading directly toward the docks.
