Session 4: The Carinae (Pt. III)
General Summary
While the rest of the ship slept, Val read Oroton's Log in the mess after finding it difficult to avoid other crew members elsewhere.
In the morning, the party joined Adriella and Karida for breakfast. Adriella left quickly after Gal and Kriskain enticed Karida to join them in a game of guessing meats by taste alone. Val disappeared to the library to do some somewhat ineffectual snooping, and ended up just trying to clean the damn place up. Lomion and Gal became the logistics administration dream team, and easily sorted and itemised the ship's hold and supply departments for sale, trade, offloading and purchase. Kriskain became so handy with the welder that she single-handedly fixed the docking hatch, as well as sealing off a couple of other hull breaches.
Lomion began to pick a fight with Karida about vegetarianism at lunch time, but managed to keep his mouth shut long enough to conjure an incredible elven dish with only the assorted ingedients that had survived the Carinae's troubles, somehow making the perfect curry out of a bad situation. Fekitoa swung by to ask for a replacement for Avram, and Lomion ran off to shaft Val so be could escape the having of Emotions that Fekitoa inspired.
Val handed over snooping duties to Lomion, who also had limited luck playing librarian, but did manage to find the personal log of a dead engineer, indicating the ship had been attacked by something Beholder-ish the day before Oroton's journal took an abrupt turn into egotism. Val ordered Avram to bring her food. Avram acquiesced, then chatted with Gal and Kriskain for a while, despite Gal's insensitive line of questioning about the concept of befriending the monsters that killed 4/5 of the Carinae's crew. Avram and Karida were revealed to be best friends who have probably never slept together.
Gal and Kriskain did the washing up, making Karida get some sleep. Kriskain took a nap and then mediated for 4 hours. Gal, meanwhile, went to engineering and learned the names of so many tools! Some even in Gnomish!
Val reconvened with Lomion after her helm shift, and the two found the logs of the old captain and Karida. The captain's log provided them with a very technically correct drawing of the space aboleth that first attacked the ship, which appeared to have been evolved for space. It also provided them with the Carinae's mission mandate: exploration well beyond the edges of the known galaxy using a new classified drive core, which was a pretty major pitfall for the characters voted Most Likely To Blackmail The Gnomish Elders, given none of this information was public and a dangerous mission by a monoracial organisation using unshared revolutionary technology would be something of a controversy, to say the least. Val and Lomion stole the four logs. Obviously. Val took a nap to recharge.
Most of the crew and all of the party reconvened in the mess hall for a time, although Val quickly left to relieve Avram again. Gal and Kriskain ended up in another insensitive line of questioning, this time with Fekitoa, who dramk heavily throughout dinner. Fekitoa slid out of that conversation and next to Lomion and preceded to flirt heavily, undeterred by the addition of Kriskain to the party. They were overwhelmed when Gal joins too, though, and wandered off to scream about lost opportunities into Avram's lap. Avram was clearly used to this, as Karida did a similar thing only five minutes prior. The party, aside from Val, went off to that sweet, sweet long rest.
Val remained on helm through the night, which led to her being mistaken for Avram when Karida appeared on thr bridge to make a mysterious phonecall comm to someone named Sherebiah, which was curious given he said, a mere hour later as Val was leaving, that the commlink didn't work. The remaining party awoke as the Carinae docked at Terminus Station.
