What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently there is no way to upload pre-written text that doesn't fit in to an existing WA format   For example, I use WA for creative writing projects and it would be helpful for me to put my scripts in my world to go along with the lore I've created. If I could put all my scripts in to a category and display it on my homepage it would help me keep everything in one place and organized and easy to share with friends

How does this feature request address the current situation?

A pdf uploader either as an image or article or whatever way is decided will allow people to load already produced work/images/whatever they want. Even if the formatting they want does exist in WA then it could eliminate a lot of copy and pasting

What are other uses for this feature request?

Anything people may want to upload to their page that they currently can't

The Team's Response

Uploads, certainly not. Extremely dangerous for both World Anvil and users of World Anvil BUT ....     [pdf:https://media.wizards.com/2019/dnd/downloads/UA-ClassFeatures.pdf|750]     Fresh off the oven. Enjoy! The first parameter is the URL (you can upload anywhere else), the second is the height of the embed.

It's a good idea, but there are technical and legal issues that do need to be thought through carefully. I implemented a similar feature for a complex web application that I architected for a large company. The technology was the easy part. The more difficult legal part was handled through strict contracts that most likely aren't realistic for an application like WA.

If this is implemented it would allow any WorldAnvil page to potentially host malicious content in ways it currently cannot. Likewise it ALSO opens up potential legal liability in terms of being responsible for whether uploaded content is pirated. Convenient? Sure. Dangerous/bad idea? Absolutely.

This would be excellent, as I could upload my custom Homebrew Rules I created on the Homebrewery to my world.

I'm not holding my breath for this, due to the security issues as we have learned (thanks for the explanation, I was unaware of this, myself)   Though, truth be told, I was thinking I would love such a feature myself. Guess I'll have to hope for the manuscript feature update and hope that it will be a lot more supportive of what I need. As for putting data through existing tools ... I have several scripts that are playing in my world, but adding those as a manuscript is an absolute nightmare because of all the script-specific formatting. I get that the manuscript software is made for writing books or a story, not a script, but yeah, I haven't found a good way to add those contents yet.

I requested the same feature for my one wish in Forge the Future of World Anvil! - World Anvil Blog google forms. Thanks for bringing it up. I don't know why people are against this.

I can understand why this sounds like a good idea at first thought, but allowing external formats to be uploaded and presented does open up the site to the risk of malicious content, either unintentionally or intentionally posted. I'm not sure WA should have to take responsibility for the gatekeeping of all that, so I'd rather users accepted resposibility for putting data through the existing tools, even if it means some copying and pasting.

This will happen when hell freezes. But anyway. Exactly this is the reason i have ... i must... use Scrivener. So this suite will also never work full on its own. :) Simple as that.

Yeah that's not ever going to happen. The only thing less secure and prone to exploits than a word document is a PDF
