Make dictionaries browseable

dictionary language search ux

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

At the moment it is not possible for users to browse through the contents of a language's dictionary making it very difficult to use for most languages and impossible to use for languages that don't follow the same structure as English.   I understand the issue with dictionaries being that they can get big, but you don't have to load everything in at once, just display 50 entries per page or something like that.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It will make the tool more user friendly, especially beginner-friendly, and will allow users to search more easily since they'll have a clearer image of how the dictionary is structured.   At the moment the tool essentially expects you to guess.

What are other uses for this feature request?

The tool could be repurposed for magic systems by listing possible ingredients that may not need full page entries.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! The Dictionary that appears in the Language template is already searchable. Making the embedded version of the dictionary browsable is planned, so this suggestion is accepted!

Unless I am missing something, this is already possible.   If you go to the Dictionary section in the Language template, there is a little clipboard icon on the top left, to copy the dictionary code. You can then paste this in any article and it will load the entire dictionary. At that point, it's on you to be able to browse the entries in the way you want.   The World Anvil Team could do a few things to make this feature a little better and easier to navigate when you have many hundreds of words (like creating a header for every starting letter used), but that's a different suggestion entirely.

I'm a little confused. Is this not already possible by copying the dictionary into an article, where it displays all the words included in alphabetical order? Or is the request asking for something else?

This could be useful for things like spell books or cook books. Or even listing different plants or animals native to a region. Right now, I make charts for that but I could see a browseable dictionary feature pairing nicely for that. Also would be nice for dictionaries

I like this idea especially for small dictionaries, where it's harder to guess what words might be included. If it were possible to embed a dictionary in other articles, it could also be used to create a recipe book, bestiary, character directory...any document that is a list of brief descriptions.

Even displaying only 10 entries per page would be helpful, if 50 still has too much lag or is too cumbersome.
