Timelines -Milestones Timeline Milestone Era Chronos

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Changing the span of eras is unnecessarily difficult. If one alters the end point of one era, they must then go and change the start of the next era, and sometimes also the historical event the have marked as milestone/era changing between those two eras.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By allowing the worldbuilder to instead mark the points where the Era changes, and label eras based on timespans between Milestone A and B, this problem can be addressed. If a feature allowing historical events to also be marked by their years relative to certain milestones, you can, for example, allow the great emperor being betrayed occurring 4 years before the fall of the empire stay the same even if you were to change the year the empire fell. This could be an optional way to create historical events when the time relative to another event is vital to the timeline, to make future editing easier.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Additional uses for the feature could include marking your timeline with the reigns of Kings as Eras, with each king's death marked as milestone. Each of the Kings deeds would be tied relatively to the Kings coronation, such that an edit of that milestone would also translate to the rest of the kings reign. One could also mark each dynasty on top of that, because you can have overlapping era. As an example of overlapping eras, If you had a timeline called STAR WARS: The Sequel Trilogy, you could have "First Order Founded", "Snoke Dies", and "First Order Falls" each as milestones in the timeline, and then have the era "First Order" be from "First Order Founded" to "First Order Falls", the era "Supreme Leader Snoke" span from "First Order Founded" to "Snoke Dies", and the era "Supreme Leader Kylo Ren" span from "Snoke Dies" to "First Order Falls". Each Era could then be displayed as vertical bars next to the timeline. The Starwars sequel trilogy was just the first example that came to mind.

Project Chronos

I checked the roadmap, and I'm pretty sure this doesn't overlap with that.

Follow up

It might overlap with the Lanes system described in the roadmap.

The Team's Response

There a lot of things that can be done with Timelines that should be one of them but it is not as simple as it sounds. I am adding this to my list of upgrades.
