Timelines Feature-Upgrade Feature-Improvement

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I really hate how as long as there's nothing happening between them, two events that are centuries apart and events that are a few days apart, are the same distance apart on the timeline. I think it needs to be more visually accurate in terms of where events are in relation to each other in time.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

I think it needs to be more visually accurate in terms of where events are in relation to each other in time. Two events that are a few days apart should be closer together on the timeline than two events that happened years apart.   This would allow authors to get a much more accurate idea of the history of our worlds, and characters, and the course of events in our stories, at a glance while we're writing.

What are other uses for this feature request?

The Team's Response

This issue will certainly be address by Chronos that will be launching ... very soon.   If you are a Grandmaster, You already have access to the BETA by activating the ALCHEMIST features under FEATURES (top right avatar)   The timelines will also get something similar to that in the future BUT it only takes a data which is 1000+ or even several billion years to probably literally crush any browser so that will need to be a mode that can only be employed under specific circumstances and optionally. I have this as my pet weekend project for some time now but there is not enough support to put it on the proper pipeline.   Making the TImelines faster/easier to edit - is. (part of the main pipeline

100% agree with this, however I think I also saw that this is included in the existing plans for the timeline update

Linearly proportional timelines aren't going to look nice as soon as you start introducting huge time gaps between events. This is common if you're trying to capture major sweeps of prehistory on the same line as contemporary events. I prefer to think of the timeline as about sequencing with the same relationship to time intervals as a schematic map has to physical geography (i.e. it is only topologically acurate). I could get behind something that scaled time logorithmically perhaps as Walicia suggests but it would have to be optional.

It's a good idea in theory but it's likely to get messy, especially if you make a timeline that consists of several events decades or centuries apart from each other.   If you must have a larger gaps, then maybe have it go something like this:   Say you have a regular gap between events that are 1 year apart (or below 10 years for consistencies sake)   Then you could have the gap twice the size if the events are decades apart   For centuries the gap could be three times as large as the regular and so on   It could be a good visual effect but you would have to make sure the gaps aren't so large that your scrolling infinitely to get to one event and even then I'm not sure how one could go about implementing something like this...

That is a bad idea. The usability of the current timelines will essentially tank as in some cases you'd have to scroll for a long time just for some perceived accuracy.   Furthermore Chronicles will offer exactly this, but on a horizontal axis. With attached map.   A visual upgrade should focus on reducing unused space on the timelines. Entries should be smaller and closer together. The goal of timelines is to give a quick overview of sequential events. Anything else is out of scope for this design.

Not entirely sure how one would determine the spacing - especially as events can be anywhere from days to millions or even billions of years apart. But it is a good idea, just...figuring out the spacing'd be a thunker.
