Use Character Photo instead of Header Image

articleblocks articles images

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, all article blocks just show the header/cover image no matter what type of article it is. However, character articles have a dedicated place for a character portrait and don't often also use a cover image for the character. This makes scrolling through characters on a world rather boring as you can't see what they look like without clicking into the article itself.   I would request that if the article type is a character and has an image, that image should show for the article block.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This would replace the generic cover image with the character portrait where one is assigned to the character, making it much more visually appealing when scrolling through lists of characters.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This would also be useful in seeing PCs in a campaign as well as NPCs in a category. This could also potentially be used for other article types that have a dedicated image attached (like organization crests/flags/etc).

The Team's Response

Heya guys, this was the case way back when and we had to change it for reasons described by someone above as well.   Character portraits tend to be vertical images 9:16 in most cases, Setting an image like that as the header of the article considering that the width will always be 1170px means that the header will end up being close to 2200px long .... which is absolutely massive and it does look very bad.   In the case of the article block I see where you are coming from but again the article blocks are using (as currently are) a horizontal image which will also look bad.   What I would like to do to, and I hope you are ok with it is to create a new type of entity called [characterblock:;ID_HERE] which will be designed specifically to suit the needs of a character by setting its image to be a portrait but it is also supported by things like the full name/title of the character, link to the article, profile and/or character sheet associated   Please feel free to ping me in #development-discussion Discord channel if you'd like to discuss this.

Character images / portraits tend to be square or vertical images.   The header is a horizontal image.   This will look absolutely horrible. It will either pixelate the image or even worse make it a MASSIVE scroll to go to the actual article.   Absolutely not, I honestly do not think that the people that voted for this understood the repercussions of this.

This seems like something that would *definitely* be helpful for things that are not just characters.

Love the idea, but I agree with SoulLink's suggestion. This option would not only benefit characters, but could also be used for items and even countries and cities with flags or crests.

it can look nice if you have a category only containing characters and then css it, but the alternative book display suggested a long time ago is better and i believe is already accepted

This is likely not going to end up look good in many cases and force us to make portraits in a certain way to make this work. An alternative would be to allow people to set a article block thumbnail that is used in place of the article header when set.

I've also really wished this were a thing but my worry is that the dimensions of most character portraits/crests is much different than that of your typical header, and I'm not sure if it will throw the sizing off or cut half the heads off some of the portraits.
