articles sorting catagories organization
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
When managing many articles at once, specifically with article organization, it can be quite tedious to manage many articles at once. What I would like is a way to manage the organization of several articles in a category at once doing the following:
- Quick Sorting: Have a button to quickly sort the arrangement of every article in a category, I would usually prefer to sort it alphabetically, but other options might be by article template type, creation/modification dates, tags, author, word count, etc.
- Multi Selection (a.k.a. "Shift Click"): The ability to mass select a number of articles simultaneously, which you can then all move to another category at once, mass delete, publish all articles at once, mark/unmark as WIP, make public or private, etc.
- Unifying Config: Have the ability to add custom CSS to multiple articles, manipulate the preferences of all articles in a category (or selected ones), or navigation, etc., and a way to normalize/apply the settings of one article to the rest.
Right now, I'm transferring a lot of content from my personal notes into World Anvil, and so I can sometimes create 10+ articles at once, say one for every npc in a chapter of my campaign. Well, the ordering of the new articles when you do it all at once gets really jumbled up, when all I really want is for the arrangement to be mostly if not completely alphabetically, so now I have to manually sort the arrangement of those 10+ articles. Or say I realize that I made those articles in the wrong category, and I don't want to manually drag all those 10 articles into another category? It is very tedious.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
Adding these features will make the management of large numbers of articles at once far more manageable. For me, especially early on in world development, I tend to shift organization and preferences a lot more frequently, but I usually want to keep the preferences the same for most if not every article, and it will take a lot of time to manually copy those settings into every article, and it gets very time consuming to move 20+ articles at once to a new category if I change my mind about organization.
What are other uses for this feature request?
These features would also probably be very helpful for the file management system, If you want to add several images at once, it can be a little tedious to organize the "gallery" category for each image.
Follow up
One thing I would like to add as it comes to unifying configuration, I think it would be helpful to have an option to apply it recursively to all subcategories, that way, if you want to say, add every article under the "root" category to a subscriber group, it would be quite easy to apply it to every article in an entire world. Though in the case of applying anything to the root of a world, it probably would be a good idea to have a dialog box pop up to confirm it, just to acknowledge that you really mean to apply that to every article in your world.
Regarding the option to alphabetically arrange things already from A-Z. I didn't realize that existed, the small link to show additional options is not very obvious and easy to miss. I admit I could have looked around more. I was expecting a button to do it on the little area for icons above the new article button, the icons that "slim down list", "expand list", "super expand", and "refresh". If there was an icon to arrange the articles next to those, I would appreciate it.
The Team's Response
Happy New Year everyone!
Guys! Alphabetical shorting IN cataegories is already possible and documented.
Go to Articles and Categories
Click on a category
On the right hand side menu, click to expand all the options
Done
Now, regarding the rest, I can tell you right now this is a quite a bit overhaul and a lot of the things mentioned above is an issue for a very small % of the userbase.
Regardless, a mass editing system will be implemented so I am accepting this as reference for when I do create the actual feature.
