  This is already possible with timelines. There is a button to add new era, and it's possible to set custom display dates and restart the counting year at the beginning of a new era. The Universal Date is used so that the website knows exactly when an event takes place at the meta level and isn't the same as what can be displayed. The custom display options for eras are under the advanced settings.
