Article-Titles-and-Links

Titles and names for articles, characters, places, etc. are often changed or altered as we continue developing our worlds. And for the most part this is fairly easy enough to change. But one thing that doesn't change with it when changing the title of an article are existing links between articles (@ links). Right now you have to try and remember every article these are mentioned in and go in and replace each one manually. It would be amazing if these links' text was also altered when an article title is changed or you at least had a way of quickly seeing which articles contain links to that article, if that is possible! Or perhaps both, an ability to change the text of all article links and some kind of list by article of other articles it's linked to.

Follow up

Thank you SoulLink, I didn't know that was there! I can see why automatically changing titles could be an issue. I suppose the only relevant bit left is, what about mentions of an article/title/name which aren't links? I think it would still be helpful to have a way of searching all mentions of a term or name throughout all articles beyond links. But there is also a chance we do have that tool and I'm simply ignorant to it.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! This has been requested before, but for now we won't implement this as it has serious technical implications due to how the system is currently built. However, Masters of the Guild and above have the "Referenced in..." panel available under Advanced Tools in the article editor (as SoulLink mentioned).

This function has been brought up before, and I've wondered why it couldn't be implemented as well, but as SoulLink pointed out, there are times that the text of the link may not be the same as the article title. That's a feature I just recently discovered myself, and I've made use of it.

If you know in advance you want to change an article's name, you can make variables. Then you use variables in articles, so [ var:links-termblah ] and [ var:nonlinks-termblah ]. That way, you only have to change the variables their content and all articles auto-update that way.   And with the advanced search checkbox on the articles page, you can "Search through vignette, excerpt, main content, sidebar and footer as well." This lets you find non-link things easily as well.

Hi, automatic changing would be a bad idea since you don't always want the text of the link to match the name of the article.   There are two features that can help you track down all the links:
  • in the article editor on the right side under Advanced Tools & Options is a Load References Tools.
  • As an alternative you can simply use the search function in the Articles menu to search for the article title or article id to find all the references.
