Startup WIZARD for new or starting users

New Feature Addition · World management · Created by wshenrygreen

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Add a startup WIZARD for new or just newbby users. Perhaps using the 6 questions offered in your YouTube thought experiment (Motivation, Genre, Scale, Mood, Theme, and Conflict).

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would allow those new or unfamiliar with worldbuilding to have a jumping off point without hours of YouTube research.

What are other uses for this feature request?

It can automatically be saved to a world’s metadata for future review and can create a basic structure for the new world. It would make worldbuilding less  daunting for those with creative ideas but not quite familiar with how to articulate them in your system.

The Team's Response

Hello anvil beans!   I absolutely agree, in fact the current "welcome" process and the automatically created articles, came to be as the starting point for a startup wizard. The difficulty we are having is that everyone is using WA for completely different things so creating a wizard is really tough.
  • I loved the idea of having a video of ACTUALLY showing someone setting up a world and using the features and I think that to begin with that might be a good way to go
  • We used to have a Startup TODO/Startup list - I will be reintroducing this
  • I think that asking you some questions regarding on what you are using the tool for will help us to better give you resources to make your life easier
  • We have been floating the idea of daily tips with practical examples
  • Please come on Discord and talk to me on #development-discussion, I would REALLY love to listen to your ideas of how this can be achieved better and if you agree / disagree with the above.

I agree with others that the meta is super useful as a jumping off point, but I also feel that a little bit more direction would be super useful. The overview videos of each feature on are nice, but I always feel frustrated after watching them. I understand what things are for and where they are located, but not how to use them for myself, in some instances. I realize that this takes a lot of playing around and deciding how a tool will work best from me, but I often just wish I could watch someone else use a tool. I think a "start up wizard" or a tour that walks you through setting up would be awesome. Being able to see a tooltip pop up and say "this is the article interface" "for this tutorial, we're going to write an article about a ______" "Press this button, then type 1-3 sentences about this ____" "this is where you mark it draft" blah blah blah.. I feel like having the pop up for "start with this meta" is great, but the "start up wizard" function would be great AFTER the meta, as a "what now"

It would be especially useful to have something about the BBC Code. As a non-technical person, I have no idea what this is, and yet everyone keeps saying you can use it. A simple guide for that would be amazing.

Kajetan/kalvorp: I think the idea is not to add something new, but rather guide the user through stuff like the meta when creating a new world. I think this is a good idea. Just a little workflow to point the user to the meta pages. I think this only needs a redirect / intermission page after world creation... "You created your world XY, now write down the cornerstones of your world and what inspires you in the meta. Click here (link to the meta)" :)

Isn't that already in? There is meta and you can turn on help articles and premade categories when you create a world

Go to World Settings and select Meta, I believe this is exactly what you're requesting. (:

Oh! This could be useful. Especially if the moment someone creates their first world, a message pops up that works like the wizard setup. It could potentially point out to new users on where things are and even point them toward the meta itself (giving a slight explanation of it too).

Isn't this what the world's meta does? It literally lifts the questions from that video and has users fill it in for their new world.
