Allow Custom Government Systems as a drop down option

Feature Upgrade · Articles & templates · Created by Spiky Potato

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

The Government System dropdown for Organizations does not allow for a custom input, meaning a certain level of speceficity is lost when the scenario calls for it, like in the case of an "Elective Magocrocy", both "Magocracy" and "Representative Democracy" would fit, but no option to make a custom answer aside from using the Sections tab and fighting it in either the direct top or bottom of your side panel, which is usable, but defeats the flow of having the same piece of info show up in the same place across all content of the same type.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By adding a option at the bottom of the drop down that would open a custom text box, most if not all edge cases can be remedied.

What are other uses for this feature request?

There are mostlikely many drowpdowns similar to the Government System one that could benefit from this change.

Follow up

As an update to clarify my suggestion, it is to add a dropdown option that when selected, merely opens a text box for custom input. Like any other text box field. The ides DMFW has are certainly an approach that could be taken, but as they even stated, they would be resource intensive.

The Team's Response

This will be added for Grandmasters in a future update (part of this same update: https://www.worldanvil.com/community/voting/suggestion/5f5966e5-cfab-4c72-9695-63f738cede78/view). Thanks for the suggestion!

I really like the dropdown prompts and would be really disappointed to lose those. While a custom box would be be a fantastic addition to this, an alternative easier solution might just be to add an "other" option to all the Type dropdowns (in all article templates).

Adding a "Custom" option to many of the dropdowns on article templates would be really useful when the standard options don't quite fit for the worldbuilder, but there isn't enough demand to make the entry a standard option. However, adding custom dropdowns might be more complicated than it appears, depending on how the database fields that support the dropdowns are implemented.

same as studio map pins, ofc it can't be every single drop-down, but a few select ones like timeline event type and government stuff could be a good start

Support for custom entries in drop downs has a much wider application than government type, and I expect if it were to be implemented it would be across the board. You'd almost certainly want to make the custom additions private at user level (but across all a user's worlds). If you had this function it would cut out a whole category of enhancement requests we see on the suggestions board all the time. I'd envisage the existing core set of code values that never need to change would be retained, plus user specific additions for each type, you can add/delete at will, merged into your personal drop down option list, maybe with some limit on the number of codes you can add per type, so as not to cripple performance. Not a trivial request (the user maintenance function might not be straightforward) but I've implemented an analogous concept in my own programming. I suspect this one might not get any traction from the devs and I'd understand why, but it is worth asking!
