Secrets footer tab display option

User Interface (UI) / User Experience (UX) · Secrets · Created by Silenc3e3e

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Whether or not the viewer can see a/a list of given secret(s), they can always see the "secrets" tab at the bottom/footer of an article that has secrets (again, even if they can't see the secrets themselves). I, as the owner, don't want to reveal that the article has a secret to be found out.

Feature request

An option on each article to select whether that tab is visible or not.
  • Default: Use the World's Global settings for secrets
  • Always visible: Even if the article has no secrets, make the tab visible to all viewers.
  • Visible if has secrets: If the article has secrets, whether or not the user has access to the secrets, make the tab visible. (Which is what the system currently uses)
  • Visible if user has access: If the article has secrets, AND the user viewing the article has the permissions to see the secrets, make the tab visible.
  • Hidden: No matter what, hide the "secrets" tab.
Then in the world configuration (or perhaps under the Secrets section) add a "default" setting that all articles use by default. It's the same as above. (minus "Default" since this IS the section to choose the default). Perhaps the default for the global settings should be "Visible if has secrets" since that is currently what happens.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This allows the owner to change if people can see the "secrets" tab in the footer section of an article or not.

What are other uses for this feature request?

When using "Always visible", it Allows the owner to keep users guessing as to where the secrets really are in the world.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We understand the problem, but with the current version of the presentation view we can't implement a solution due to technical constraints. However, we're accepting this as part of a future planned update that will remove these constraints.

I'm very much for this idea! It would be great to add the secret information but not spoil people by letting them know that there is more - to lets say a country - than meets the eye.   I want to be able to write down that information and reveal it once the right time comes while also giving my players the oportunity to figure out the plot points by themselves during sessions. Just hiding it as a secret as it currently is takes that away in my opinion.

I believe this has been suggested before. But not sure. I still think this is a great suggestion.

I think it could be kept simple and only show the secrets tab if you have access to see any of the secrets in the article. This was actually how I thought it worked all these years.

I’d be all for this if there was a way to simplify it a bit, just to complicate things less for the average user and put less of a workload on the team. Maybe just hiding the secrets tab from everyone who doesn’t have access to the secrets? (Adding the secrets tab to every single article regardless of whether or not it’s empty would confuse me a lot as the author.) Providing the ability for everyone to choose between so many options on every article seems a little excessive.

Wow, I didn't realize the Secrets tab showed on all pages with Secrets, even if I can't see those secrets... as a user, I'd expect to only see the Secrets tab on pages where I have access to read associated Secrets...

This could require a lot of coding, but it seems like it's a good idea to consider.
