offline data-saver speed quicker view edit
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
When using World Anvil to even navigate an existing World and not make changes you must have internet, and it relies on the site also not going down.
When on slow connections things are slow to load, or you simply cannot view your world at all if there is no internet access.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
Having a "mobile data" version of the site would allow access when on the go via roaming without consuming vast amounts of data (by not pre-loading images, backgrounds, etc) and should make everything run quicker on slower connections.
Alternatively, being able to "download" a world in a large zip file with the relative HTMLs all stored together with linked functionality would allow someone to still utilise their world when no connection is available.
Ideally, this would be something implemented in the planned desktop app (automatically downloading files on a non-metered connection).
Or a sync function so any edits/changes made would be "reuploaded" when connection was restored (similar to how OneDrive/Google Drive works, but being aware the difficulty of running such a thing on this scale would be challenging for a team of this size perhaps the low-data and offline download would be more feasible?)
What are other uses for this feature request?
I feel I have covered the alternative uses in the above, but in general, low-data/offline options for at least viewing the world would be very useful. Editing when in the same situations of course even more so, but I imagine overly challenging.
The Team's Response
Hi! First of all, I saw you mentioned Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive in your suggestion, so I thought I'd clarify something. These companies have thousands of developers, while we don't even have ten—we're a tiny company! Offline access is an incredibly difficult feature to implement in a stable way, and right now we are focused on other parts that have a higher priority.
That being said, a later stage of our planned (but not scheduled) mobile app will eventually have some offline functionality. Note that this is a later stage of a project that hasn't started (and won't start until version 1 of World Anvil is released), so it's very much in the long term.
