Low Data/Offline World

offline data-saver speed quicker view edit

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

When using World Anvil to even navigate an existing World and not make changes you must have internet, and it relies on the site also not going down.  When on slow connections things are slow to load, or you simply cannot view your world at all if there is no internet access.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Having a "mobile data" version of the site would allow access when on the go via roaming without consuming vast amounts of data (by not pre-loading images, backgrounds, etc) and should make everything run quicker on slower connections. Alternatively, being able to "download" a world in a large zip file with the relative HTMLs all stored together with linked functionality would allow someone to still utilise their world when no connection is available.   Ideally, this would be something implemented in the planned desktop app (automatically downloading files on a non-metered connection). Or a sync function so any edits/changes made would be "reuploaded" when connection was restored (similar to how OneDrive/Google Drive works, but being aware the difficulty of running such a thing on this scale would be challenging for a team of this size perhaps the low-data and offline download would be more feasible?)

What are other uses for this feature request?

I feel I have covered the alternative uses in the above, but in general, low-data/offline options for at least viewing the world would be very useful. Editing when in the same situations of course even more so, but I imagine overly challenging.

The Team's Response

Hi! First of all, I saw you mentioned Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive in your suggestion, so I thought I'd clarify something. These companies have thousands of developers, while we don't even have ten—we're a tiny company! Offline access is an incredibly difficult feature to implement in a stable way, and right now we are focused on other parts that have a higher priority.   That being said, a later stage of our planned (but not scheduled) mobile app will eventually have some offline functionality. Note that this is a later stage of a project that hasn't started (and won't start until version 1 of World Anvil is released), so it's very much in the long term.

I like the idea of an offline world, the ability to download a world in its current state. For some people (myself included) I love having backups of backups in case the worst was to happen (not that I doubt WA do this already)   I'm not sure how I feel about a low data mode. I'm a commuting student and some of my only times to work have been on trains or buses, and yet a low data mode could have been useful but at the same time, internet access is prominent enough to provide opportunities in these cases. Its a tough case.   I think this should be put to the WA team, but I'm not certain that everything from the post is perfect for WA as it stands

I like the idea of a low data mode, and I like the idea of being able to download your world (though I am pretty sure you can already do that) but considering this is a browser, how do you even intend to get onto WA without internet? Low internet is possible, but not when there is no internet.

This is a unnecessary use of developer time and effort. You'll probably need a app? And if you have a app, why have a website? Keeping both up to date would be even worse use of resources, you don't need offline, I get it ok, but really its not a good use of time. Spend it on new features, not large features that don't add very much at all.

I like the part of this that would allow you to download to contents of the world, and low internet mode would definitely help World Smiths that operate in more remote areas. That being said I am not sure how many users are from regions of the world with patchy internet access so this is likely not a high priority.

I'm sorry, but I think internet access is prevalent enough to render this request less useful than its worth.

While I understand what you mean, I don't think the dev time on this would be worth it... I get wanting to look something up when there's no connection, especially if you're a game master running a session, but I have found that just opening the articles you might need in multiple tabs in advance works great.

what is with these new suggestions...... it's like asking for a no internet version of youtube. Write the article in a docx then put it on the site after? Do people really lack this much creativity on a site meant for creative endeavors?
