article-organization organization article

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

There is no easy way to have an article have two different names. One may be an exonym, the other an demonym.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Now that I am delving deep into my worldbuilding, I find that several languages offer several names to one place. If there was a "alternate names" section I could use, it would help organize my world better.

What are other uses for this feature request?

It can be used for organization and to specify which language calls what what. For example, a country that in common is known as Rerya may be called Arcorvatavá in Elvish. Having both or any other names as prescribed by dwarves, etc. would be extremely useful.

Follow up

This is for the purpose of searching articles, not just alternate names. Those I know can be stated in articles, but I'm talking about being able to search two different names for the same thing.
Dimitri's response is awesome! Thank you so much!!

The Team's Response

If you wish to search by alternative name all you need to do is to add the alternative name as a tag to the article :) Very simple and super quick.   Yes I could make it to also look under the "Alternative Names" but this will duplicate the search for thousands of people already using the tags correctly AND it means that you will have to put possibly secret names in the Alternative Names section, which most people wouldn't want.

I find it very frustrating to be stuck using one name for autolinking when many of my articles use alternate or nicknames. Please implement!

Absolutely, when I say something has an alternative name, I mean, it's reasonable to call it the Shadow Plane, or the Plane of Shadow, whatever. First world, or Feywild, whatever, I don't care. I want the autolinker to link it either way, I want search to show either way. I'm not casting a spell where i feel it's important to get exact references right, i'm using technology :P   Is it already not like this because of server load or performance or something? This should be optimisable?

Alternate names, I think, make sense on all templates, would it be really that much work to add?

I like the suggestion that by adding an alternate name to the "Alternate Names" field, it automatically adds it as a tag, or becomes searchable/linkable via some other function.

This already exists, you have to use the tags section of your article on the right hand side at the top. Yes it is annoying you'd have to place your alternate names twice. Though I could see a modification of alternate names in an article, so that they instead are added as tags.

I like this thought, though alternatively, I'd also like to see optional dual categories for articles. i.e. A country is an organization as well as a geographic location-- for the purpose of putting settlements under the parent location of the country without having to have two articles.

This would be wonderful! We have a ton of places and events that are named different things by our various cultures, so unifying them would be wonderful.

there already is an alternate names section in geography, settlement, building and organization templates. It won't show next to the article title, but in the sidebar
