Story 13: Pear

It’s the big day. It’s been raining for the past 3 days, and Sky has lost all their trust in the weather forecast. There is a knock at the door and Sky hurries over to open it. They realise it’s just the wind growing stronger and stronger, though. They are about to turn and leave when Aero shouts hello from the other side.

Sky doesn’t remember any specific reasoning on why Aero would be in front of her door at all today. Nevertheless Sky opens the door and lets Aero inside, out from the rain.

“Thank you, Sky,” Aero smiles, still as bright despite his drenched hair. Aero stumbles across the threshold, burdened by a pile of boxes and a very heavy backpack. Sky eyes the abundance of things he’s carrying, confused.

Aero picks up on Sky’s confused expression and asks if they had forgotten what today was.

“It’s a Saturday…?” Sky asks, blinking.

“Yes… and I thought we’d agreed to setup some tech o knowledgey. As you put it.” Aero responds.

“Ah,” Sky nods, memory slowly relieving. “Right. I’m so sorry, it completely slipped off my mind.”

“No worries. Did you have somewhere in mind to setup?” Aero smiles patiently.

Sky scans through their apartment, and is mentally thankful that they for whatever reasons they decided to clean up a corner in their working room the other day.

“Would over here work?” Sky asks, assessing the number of boxes Aero is still carrying.

Aero smiles and nods. “It looks perfect.”

Aero begins to put down the boxes and unpacks them. Sky watches as he takes out a huge monitor and wires after wires, a lot of wires. Aero then proceeds to explain what each of the items are for, from the wifi router to the computer, monitor and keyboard.

Sky nods through Aero’s explanation, before the realisation strikes them that they haven’t offered Aero anything to drink. Aero begins to start plugging things in and prepares to switch it all on.

“Um, Aero,” Sky starts, and is taken aback by Aero turning at them, still smiling. “Would you like anything to drink? Tea or coffee, perhaps?”

“Just some water is fine. Hurry though, this is the exciting part.”

Sky came back with a glass of water, then sat back down to watch Aero go through his next bunch of electronic things. Aero reaches over and switches the computer on, the wonderful tune of pear OS rings awakening Meowmeow.

The cat familiar leaps closer to the sound source, and Aero grins brightly at the sight of her.

“Hello there little kitty.” Aero teases.

Meowmeow, strangely, warms up to the stranger, to Sky’s amusement –– maybe Aero just has that effect with both people and animals.

“Anyway, what would you like your username to be? This will be how you log in to the computer, like a passport to access the internet.”

Sky thinks for a second, and look back at Aero – “What would you recommend?”

“Most people just use their name.” Aero replies kindly.

“Oh,” Sky smiles at that, “I’ll just use my name then, thank you.”

Aero proceeds to type in Sky’s name and then asks for a photo. Sky tilts their head and softly said that they will have to dig through whatever photo they used for job applications back then.

Aero sensing the pain Sky is about to make, grabs Meowmeow and shoves her face in front of the camera and then puts her back down before she can react.

“There, perfect.”

“Also what password” Aero adds quickly

Sky thinks, and types down the first thing that came to their mind.

“Great!” Aero exclaims ecstatically and then proceeds to introduce Sky to the basics of the interface and how to browse the internet.

The rain outside continues, but Sky found themselves not minding at all as they sit in Aero’s company, awkwardly stumbling over the complicated wires of technology, with Meowmeow between them.
