Story 6: Returning

The cheeseburger at The Academy’s cafeteria is as terrible as Sky remembers. The ones she has tried made by Normie’s is heaven in comparison. It doesn’t change how lovely it feels to be back in the Academy, though. Sky is back to renew their normie visa and magic license. It is the license that testifies that Sky is qualified to control their magic abilities even in the Normies world. Those who fail their magic proficiency test or fail the ethics exam can either stay in the Academy World and live in or attend the Academy until they pass again or give up their magic and return to the Normie world as sleeper Special’s, hidden until the unspoken day comes.

Sky threads through the halls with high ceilings, a couple of familiar professors that taught them, the current students jumping from one class to their next ones. Sky then turns away from the school wings and into administration, swiftly moving towards the exam hall. Sky’s smile falters when they catch a glimpse of the person sitting on one of the exam desks. Rawon, the infamous mischief maker during Sky’s time, is minding his own business when he looks up and sees Sky.

“Gray!” He exclaims, and Sky is already having a bad feeling about all this.

“Hello Dashi.” Sky whispers in reply.

“Fancy seeing you here, it’s been what, 2 years? Since the reunion, wasn’t it?” Rawon flashes a smile, and the not-so-good memories come rummaging through Sky’s mind.

“Something like that.” Sky mutters, “I think. It’s still a blur.” Sky knows it's a lie and Rawon probably does too. Rawon was, after all, one of the people who was constantly at the top of their year throughout their time at school.

“What are you in for this time?” Rawon asks accusingly.

“My Normie Visa and Magic License is expiring soon,” Sky shrugs.

“Is that it? Well you probably wouldn’t tell me anyway, honour, pride and all that.” Rawon jibes mockingly.

“Yeah, that’s it. I’m not out there pulling tricks on Normies,” Sky responds, trying to sound as disinterested as she can, “what brings you here?”

“Oh the usual. Some gambling here, some jail time there.” Rawon casually says, as if breaking Normie law and getting in the news was nothing serious.

“I see,” Sky hums thoughtfully, already sensing the fact that it is so much more than that this time –– Rawon has never been the best at guarding his thoughts either.

As Sky peers into Rawon’s head, the examiner arrives and Sky is forced to abandon the heist and take a seat. They could almost feel the sense of relief all over Rawon, and Sky grins subtly at the thought of making him feel unsettled.

The exam is completed uneventfully and then one by one they are escorted off for medical checks and the ethics review with *shudder* Mr Asio otus.
