Help & Advice

Art is society's way to express itself, to rebel against something. Keep that in mind while you're writing. And remember that art can come out in very different ways: painting, literature, but also music, architecture... Art movements are often intellectual movements too.   Art movements are mostly reactions against what was before. As an example, realism followed romanticism. Romanticism was extremely focused on beings, on the self, on nature, on emotions, especially on love stories that tend to end badly and so on. If you read an autobiography of a romantic author, you will most likely think that they had an awful life full of misery. Well, not necessarily: it was just the way they were writing. Realism, as a reaction, was focused not on emotions, but on facts—on science. In literature as well as in painting, it was very detailed, almost too much ss; landscapes, people, everything was described in a way that was, in fact, quite unrealistic... Nothing was left to the imagination, it was all about facts.   Art movements can also be a reaction to what is happening in the world. For example, the movements of Dada was named after a random word picked in a dictionary. In this movement, the main word was nothing! The movement was born out of the disgust from World War One and preached confusion and doubt. Everything society was about didn't make any sense (thanks to the war which had destroyed "sense") so Dada wanted people to believe in something more abstract than society's conventions: chance, coincidence... The name was therefore picked randomly.   There is still some kind of freedom on what the exact reaction will be. While Dada, born out of World War One, still carried a message of hope, joy, freedom... romanticism, which was born out of the French's despair after the defeat at the battle of Waterloo, the failure that was their dream of a better world after their Revolution was mostly about sad stories.
