Banshee

The nature and temperament of banshees has been hotly debated across the mythoses by the few who really care. In Zurn, some of the details are universally understood (though “misunderstood” is also a fair claim): banshees are winged ethereal creatures about seven inches tall, they have webbed feet and webbed hands, and they let out a terrible holler when they scream.   Now in truth, this is unfair to banshees: they can actually make quite quiet sounds as well, it’s just that most races don’t hear that sound very often. In the banshee language (which they call Gaeilge), nuance of tone is done by decibel, so they fluctuate the volume to add intonation to their words. Thus what appears to us to be wild screaming or loud weeping is, in fact, simply the fluctuation of tone and meaning in the words they say.   That being said, the sprites are quite familiar with particular patterns among their language. The screaming banshees are the warrior class, releasing a very distinct scream as they charge into battle (it usually translates to the tune of, “bring them down before us, but spare the young and old,” but very few people speak banshee, so this is largely unknown).   Sprites also commonly hear what they refer to as weeping (though the banshee may not necessarily be sad – this is more of a subdued emotion, so it may reflect happiness or sadness), which is lyrically almost on-par with the sundancers and the fairies in its mysterious beauty.   Banshees have no natural aversions to any magic lore, though they are not particularly well-known for their mages. The ones they have are competent and capable, and have mastered the art of harnessing the power of the air to aid them (which some say is also why their wailing and screaming can be heard so many miles away).
