The First Great War

For the most part, the world before the great war is splintered into small tribes and warring factions. The different cultures/races have minimal contact with each other, many considering others to be myths, or demons/monsters. While each race has an overall religion there are many different myths, practices, and variations of each springing up. The tech level is late Bronze Age, early Iron Age. With the tribal wars in Massaria and the magic usage among humans gunpowder is not developed at a corresponding time to earth history. Communication over long distances is slow and unreliable. Trade is limited.   At the time of the Great War the world was well into the late Iron Age and entering the Middle Ages. Most of the races had come together into two or three factions each. The splintering of religions had ceased and there was movement towards more formal, unified worship. There was increased trade and contact between some of the races. The Great War occurred because the Deork Priests formed an alliance with the Haider and one tribe of Elves with the intent of invading large portions of other territories. The Alarans believed this was a holy war and sought the aid of the one person they believed could halt what they labelled a “spread of darkness”. This person was Argrider. Argirder had grown up the son of a farmer but in his late teens discovered he was pure blooded Alaran, the only one of his race to have two Alaran parents and no wings. They told him he was destined to bring the Races of Light together under one banner to defeat the Armies of Darkness. While he didn’t believe the destiny stuff or the religious war stuff, he understood that a war would be bad and agreed to help. He rallied allies from many races and soon was at war. He ended the war by seeking out specific items and people from each allied race and performing a powerful spell, with the blessing of both Helene and Sedea. This spell cast half the planet into more or less permanent darkness beneath a thick layer of storm clouds. Argrider was then crowned the first king of a unified human nation. However, he declared the human territories too large for one man to rule and allowed the Eastern Kingdom self-governance. The two countries, divided by the Fairy and Dryad forests, remained close friends and allies. At one point, the Royal Line of Argrider produced twins and one was married off to the Eastern Kingdom to renew the peace between them. The Alaran line soon ended in the East but remained strong in the West until the Second Great War, some eleven or so generations later.
