Jonathan Arbutus

Backstory The Arbutus family has an estate in Caprex and has long been one of the ruling families of the city. Younger sons have been captains of the guards, generals, and members of various economic and judiciary councils. Several members of the family have, over the generations, been selected as direct advisors to the royal family. Jonathan’s father was the advisor to King Darius and lived in the advisor’s suite beneath the castle. Jonathan grew up at the Flying Kingdom and attended classes and training there his entire childhood and youth. His only absence was frequent trips into the city to the family estate where his father’s brother was lord. Jonathan’s cousin died in a hunting accident leaving Jonathan as heir to the Arbutus seat in Caprex. He gave up his claim to that seat when Tritaton chose him as Royal Advisor. His sister and her husband inherited the Arbutus estate and the political power that went along with it. Jonathan does not like to talk about the fact that he was Tritation’s second choice for Royal Advisor. He also carries deep resentment over the fact that Tritaton married Catra and not his sister. Jonathan married his teenage sweetheart, Gwendolyn Naid. They have two sons, Troy and Luke. They live in the advisor’s suite beneath the castle.   Personality Jonathan was a serious youth with a talent for magic and a sharp mind when it came to his education. He only ever “cut loose” around Tritaton, Ohanzee, Gwendolyn, and his sister. Over the years his sense of humour has diminished. He is a strict father and a strict teacher. He expects perfection and absolute obedience. He is distant and disinterested. He knows best and expects his entire family to simply follow his commands at all times without discussion or disagreement. His resentment drives him and is the key emotional motivation behind his plan to have Troy succeed him as advisor and Luke marry Sepherym. He feels slighted and is driven to protect his sons from the same “embarrassment”.
