Session 5: Journey Through the Forest

General Summary

  • After recovering from the violet fungus debacle, the group pondered whether to take the left or the right path
  • With some investigation, it was determined that the left path had been more well-traveled, and after making a sign to warn travelers of dangerous mushrooms, that is where they went
  • Rath continued to suffer from the spores he inhaled, leaving him exhausted and not able to contribute much, but Yngis kept an eye on him
  • Along the way, there was a net trap that Trent discovered and Bud disarmed by cutting a trip wire while the others stood back
  • Further down the road, Trent climbed a tree to get a better vantage point, but discovered a bee hive, which he attacked, drawing the attention of angry bees
  • Bud knocked the hive out of the tree and some more came out. The party then had to fight off two swarms. Blowing the remaining bees and the hive away with a gust of wind, Trent and Yngis moved ahead to collect some honey before continuing onward
  • A short while later, they could see a large group of goblins fighting an even larger group of myconids (mushroom folk). They figured it was best to use a nearby deer path to hopefully loop around and avoid the battle
  • They did so, but came across yet more traps (a net trap, a bee-hive trap, a swinging log trap, a pit full of dead snakes because someone forgot to feed them, etc.)
  • The one trap that they did not avoid was a bear trap. As Bud stepped on it and the metal teeth bit into his ankle, a cage cobbled together from metal and wood and twine fell on him, and inside it was an angry bear! A bear trap that traps you with a bear! Oh my!
  • While Bud fought off the bear, Blu blasted it with a wave of thundering energy that resounded throughout the forest. They soon defeated the bear and with the entire group’s help, the cage was lifted and Bud was freed
  • Moving ahead, the party came across a cave where a handful of goblins were lounging about. They noticed each other and a battle ensued, with a near-endless amount of goblins swarming the young heroes. The goblins seemed to be accompanied by a strange goblin with a cap and a strange stick, that could cast spells and was particularly difficult to harm. A few hobgoblins joined the fray, as well, and things were looking dire
  • However, just as the goblins were beginning to gain the upper hand, a MYSTERIOUS STRANGER appeared and offered them aid This stranger was a hulking humanoid, of a race of people called Beastmen (or Beastfolk). Blu recalled seeing a few of them when he was growing up in Seyda, though none had ever visited Northvale and the others were unfamiliar
  • The beastman joined the battle and with his help, the group emerged victorious. He also used some sort of nature magic to cause the mouth of the cave to become overgrown with thorny vines and leaves, keeping more goblins from coming out, and then he collapsed the entrance after the fight before addressing the party
  • They learned that his name was Zeke and he was a wanderer. He seemed to possess great power and not only could he fight, command nature, and so on, he was also able to heal Bud’s wounds, as his were the most severe
  • Exhausted, the group decided to retire to Zeke’s camp, as the sun had set and it had been a long day. There they broke bread and shared stories, preparing to head out again the next morning
