Session 21: The Caverns of Potential

Continuing on…
After a short debate, the party decided to move on instead of taking a short rest. Bud Towers and Rath began discussing the fate of the child they left behind. Fearful that the child had to go it alone, they decided to determine his fate later and possibly take on the child as an apprentice.
After Bud Towers tossed everyone out of the pit (or they climbed the rope…or whatever), the party continued down the path upon they first set out. At the dead-end Blu noticed something sparkling. Among the debris there were remnants of a mage’s workshop. In specific he found a crystal ball. Bud Towers backed from the dead-end and looked upon the path they had not taken. Bud found a portrait of an elf. The figure had a mustache/goatee combo. He was holding a bowl in one hand while casting with the other. In the background was a book open to a page. Bud took out the bowl he had and started mimicking the motions made by the elf in the picture. After nothing happened, Bud tried to take the painting but it would not budge. He then tried to use Earthheart to cut out the picture, but the holy weapon did not cut. After not being able to do anything with the painting, the group continued on.
As they walked, slowly…cautiously…the large crystal flashed with blue light and a red skinned goblin riding on a huge bug giant. After a harrowing fight that left Rath unconscious on the ground, they decided it was time to rest. They then pressed on, and following the path they reached the precipice of an escarpment with a wizard statue. There were two runes on the ground, which Rath pointed out were from some language… of some kind… and they looked familiar…
While Rath was looking at the runes Bud Towers put the bowl he attained earlier and put it in the hand of the statue, but then removed it when nothing seemed to happen. Rath figured out that the statue can rotate and Bud rotated it to the leftmost rune. His eyes went dark, leaving only black, soulless eyes, and he moved to attack his friends. However, with quick thinking, Blu cast Invisibility and both Rath and Blu disappeared. After a minute of confusion, Bud Towers returned to being the Hero of Our Time.
Rath then turned the statue back to the other rune and Bud returned the bowl back into the statues hand. Magical smoke rose up from the bowl and formed into a large golden key. Bud took the key and the bowl and the party moved onto the path and ascended stone steps into a grand chamber. There was a ring of crystals with a massive mushroom-like floating creature. It called down thunder and lightning and nearly did the party in, but after Blu and Rath hit it back-to-back with ice and fire, the creature died in a terrible firesplosion.
